Fire and Life Safety Manager / Fire Marshal The primary purpose of this position is to serve as the administrator of the Fire and Life Safety section of the Emergency Preparedness and Strategic Initiatives Department. This high‑impact leadership role coordinates the campus fire and life safety program, leads a team of professionals, champions compliance initiatives, and shapes programs to protect lives and property. The role involves emergency response, strategic planning, and advancing best practices to keep the campus safe, prepared, and forward‑thinking. Responsibilities Lead and develop a talented team—support hiring, performance management, and professional growth—while driving operational excellence through resource management and process improvement. Take full ownership of a comprehensive fire and life safety program that spans the entire university, overseeing compliance, guiding program direction, and ensuring alignment with state and regulatory partners such as the Office of State Fire Marshal and State Construction Office. Review inspections, incident data, and program outcomes to identify trends, strengthen compliance, and continuously enhance safety performance; play a critical role in inspections, investigations, and regulatory coordination. Oversee system testing and construction compliance; manage budgets and advance program initiatives to build a safer, smarter campus. Design and deliver engaging fire and life safety training programs tailored to a varied campus community, including First Aid, CPR, fire extinguisher use, fire watch protocols, and emerging topics such as e‑mobility device safety. Ensure the team maintains critical certifications and stays current with evolving industry standards, including EMT, HazMat, NIMS, and more. Lead a robust and proactive safety culture: oversee inspections, drills, permitting, and system testing to meet and exceed all fire and life safety requirements. Review construction and renovation projects to ensure alignment with state and national codes, collaborate closely with campus partners for specialized installations and large‑scale events. Serve as a key connector across campus and beyond, building strong partnerships with internal stakeholders and external agencies, ensuring seamless coordination of fire and life safety programs. Support continuous improvement of processes such as plan reviews, inspections, alarm testing, and water supply systems through clear communication and collaboration. Other tasks and responsibilities may be assigned based on organizational needs. Qualifications Minimum Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree and two years of related experience; or Master’s degree in a related discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Degrees must be from accredited institutions. Other Required Qualifications Ability to communicate openly and effectively through interpersonal interaction and written communication. Ability to develop a plan for fire/life safety programs that fit the needs of the campus community. Ability to develop a good working relationship with building liaisons and involve them in plan development. Ability to effectively work with non‑university partners sharing critical fire/life safety information. Preferred Qualifications Experience with incident command systems (ICS) and emergency response coordination. Knowledge of NFPA standards, North Carolina building and fire codes, and regulatory requirements. Experience managing budgets and leading program initiatives. Licenses, Certifications and Driver’s License Requirements N.C. EMT‑B (or obtain within 6 months); HazMat Awareness. Valid North Carolina driver’s license required. Must be obtained within 60 days of hire. Commercial Driver’s License not required.
