Job Summary The lab is looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic, and organized researcher to assist in research aimed at antigen discovery in various autoimmune and infectious diseases affecting the central nervous system. The role involves studying immune system cells in the peripheral blood and cerebrospinal fluid of newly diagnosed patients, as well as antibody profiles in patients with various types of meningitis and encephalitis. The Staff Research Associate II (SRA II) will assist with processing of human peripheral blood and cerebrospinal fluid samples using sophisticated phage immunoprecipitation sequencing protocols. The role requires a comprehensive knowledge of display technologies such as yeast or phage display and a general understanding of protein‑antibody interactions. Responsibilities Assist in research aimed at antigen discovery in autoimmune and infectious diseases affecting the central nervous system. Study immune system cells in peripheral blood and cerebrospinal fluid of newly diagnosed patients and antibody profiles in meningitis and encephalitis patients. Assist with processing of human peripheral blood and cerebrospinal fluid samples on phage immunoprecipitation sequencing protocols. Maintain knowledge of display technologies such as yeast or phage display and understand protein‑antibody interactions. Manage patient visit schedules and demonstrate scheduling flexibility and a positive attitude. Perform bacteriophage culturing, nucleic acid preparation, next–generation sequencing library preparation, database management, sample management, and human primary lymphocyte processing (60%). Maintain stocks, reagents, laboratory equipment, and perform other assigned duties (20%). Perform calculations, compile and summarize data, prepare charts and graphs, draft reports of problems, methods, results, and tentative conclusions, and troubleshoot experiments based on irregularities (20%). Qualifications BA/BS degree in a related science and knowledge of or experience with the techniques or methods required by the position, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. One or more years of recent, directly related work experience following degree completion utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position. Experience working with human biological samples. Conceptual understanding of basic human physiology and immunology. Knowledge of scientific equipment such as centrifuges, pipettes, and ultra‑low freezers. Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook. Ability to multi‑task and prioritize. Excellent communication skills. Flexible schedule – ability to work evenings and weekends. Meticulous record‑keeping abilities. Preferred Qualifications Minimum one or more years of experience working with human biological samples. Minimum one year of experience working with molecular biology techniques such as PCR, gel electrophoresis, bacterial cell culture, immunoprecipitation, and Western blotting. Ability to draft routine reports and keep accurate records of work performed. Active pursuit of opportunities to increase skills and expertise. Ability to learn complex tasks with general instruction and to apply experience to a variety of new techniques. Salary and Benefits The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.
