Senior Staff, Clinical Microbiology

Responsibilities Provide clinical operational oversight and consultation for microbiology testing, with the majority of effort devoted to clinical service activities. Participate in clinical call responsibilities, including presentation of patient results and didactic case‑based teaching at Microbiology Rounds and supervision of microbiology fellows on a rotating basis. Oversee and develop appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic tests to support NIH clinical protocols in the care of patients. Advise clinicians and NIH physician scientists on the significance of diagnostic procedures and interpretation of laboratory test results. Manage the financial and technical resources of the laboratory. Coordinate work with the technical supervisors of the specialty sections. Ensure that all specialty laboratory staff members and postdoctoral clinical microbiology fellows are appropriately trained. Mentor and teach NIH and visiting infectious disease fellows and microbiology fellows. Contribute to the comprehensive laboratory safety policies of the laboratory and assure that relevant staff are knowledgeable and compliant with safe laboratory practices. Initiate independent and collaborative research projects in clinical microbiology and/or infectious diseases with NIH investigators, other NIH scientists, and outside collaborators. Analyze, evaluate, and interpret scientific and clinical data to prepare papers for publication in peer‑reviewed journals and present findings at seminars and scientific meetings. Keep abreast of scientific and clinical developments through the review of literature, and attending professional meetings, conferences, and symposia. Qualifications Ph.D. in Microbiology or related field with postdoctoral training resulting in certification or eligibility for certification by the American Board of Medical Microbiology, or MD with board certification or eligibility in Medical Microbiology or Clinical Pathology and a current U.S. medical license. Eight (8) years of experience as a Scientist/Clinician with medical microbiology or clinical pathology experience. Experience translating scientific and clinical data into peer‑reviewed publications, presenting findings at scientific forums, and supporting fellow training through case‑based teaching and mentorship. Must be able to obtain and maintain a Federal or DoD “public trust”; candidates must obtain approved adjudication of their public trust prior to onboarding. Nice‑to‑Have Qualifications Expertise in bioinformatics, including the use of tools, pipelines, and methodologies for Next Generation Sequencing data processing. A strong record of independent and collaborative research. Compensation The annual salary range for this position is $149,000–$248,000. Compensation decisions depend on a wide range of factors, including but not limited to skill sets, experience, training, security clearances, licensure, certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
