Equipment Operator

Job Description

The purpose of the class is to operate heavy and/or specialized equipment and/or trucks in the maintenance, construction and/or repair of County roads and drainage systems. In support of assigned area of operations, this class maintains assigned equipment and performs other work as required. The class works according to some procedures but decides how or when to do things; work is reviewed frequently by supervisor. Specific duties may vary depending on department assigned.

Essential Job Functions

Regularly operates and performs skilled motorized equipment work in support of street maintenance/repair, storm water drainage, recycling operations and other service operations throughout the County; performs other general or specialized functions of the Public Works Department. Operates most motorized heavy equipment as required by Dorchester County. Operates at least four (4) pieces of heavy and/or specialized equipment with little supervision, such as: motor graders, D-3 thru D-7 dozers, menzimucks, motorgraders, gradealls, large hydraulic excavators, or vactor trucks at a fully proficient level. May also operate other smaller equipment regularly operated by an Equipment Operator I and II. May be responsible for some lead responsibility. Ensures the safety of County equipment, private property and others by following proper safety procedures, watching for overhead power lines and checking for underground utilities; checks for traffic; sets out traffic cones and signs according to the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD); and flags traffic as needed. May perform a variety of manual labor, depending on area of assignment, such as: using a rake to spread asphalt or gravel; cutting out pavement with a shovel or jackhammer; installing new pipe; performing taps; installing fire hydrants; cutting and clearing vegetation and debris; loading and unloading materials, supplies, or equipment; landscaping; trimming trees; clearing debris; laying blocks or bricks; grading roads; and various repair or construction projects. May paint highway lines, directional arrows, speed hump warning lines and stop bars; install highway center line reflectors. Mixes cement/concrete; performs concrete work as required. May pick up and transport solid waste and recyclable materials; may plan route for transports. May maintain sign room and supplies; set up parameters for signs sent to plotters; cover/pre-face raw metal signs for use; reface returned signs; and finish making those signs. May fabricate and/or weld as well as perform electrical or carpentry work. Uses hand and power tools in various manual tasks as required. May perform various duties associated with road system maintenance and construction. Inspects equipment to ensure proper and safe working conditions; reports defects or required maintenance to the supervisor. Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of assigned tools and equipment. Uses welding and cutting torches as needed in equipment maintenance. Performs general landscaping work as required to repair work sites. May perform pre-trip/post-trip inspections of tractor; drains air tanks. Deals with homeowners who have issues on what is being done and, particularly, how they want it done. Performs all duties in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, laws, regulations, and standards of quality and safety. May provide crew instruction and leadership as assigned; assists co-workers with various duties as required. Attends meetings, training, etc., as required, to enhance job knowledge and skills. Performs other related job duties as assigned. All County employees are considered public servants for the citizens of Dorchester County. When requested before, during, or after an emergency event, County employees are expected to work and serve the public in coping with the emergency.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED preferred. Requires at least three (3) years. Must possess a valid state driver's license. CDL license preferred.

Additional Requirements

Work is performed in an environment with heavy equipment and machinery that could result in bodily harm to co-workers or others. Dorchester County has the right to revise this job description at any time. This description does not represent in any way a contract of employment. This is a full-time position; typical work 40 hours per week Monday through Sunday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Some flexibility in hours is allowed, but employees must be available during the "core" work hours of 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and must work 40 hour each week to maintain full-time status. Must be available to work holidays and weekends during emergencies. This is a safety sensitive position and employees holding this position have the responsibility for their own safety and the safety of others. This position is subject to random drug testing. E.O.E.
