Freshman Head Boys Basketball Coach Location: Diocese of Phoenix Catholic Schools, Notre Dame Preparatory High School – Scottsdale, Arizona. Starting Date: Immediately. Job Description Purpose and Scope Under the supervision of the principal and the athletic director, the head coach coordinates and administers the sport they are responsible for, following the guidelines, rules, and regulations of the National Federation of High Schools, the Arizona Interscholastic Association, the Diocese of Phoenix, the school, the athletic department, and the specific Conference in which the school participates. The coach promotes the Catholic School culture by serving as a witness to students and the community. Through this role, the coach cooperates with Christ in the academic, spiritual, and social education of high school students, obtains necessary certificates, participates in ongoing professional development, maintains accurate records, and serves as a mentor and campus minister. Effective communication via phone and email, timely completion of duties, flexibility, forward‑thinking, and a willingness to adopt the latest coaching practices are required. The coach must use experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals while demonstrating creativity and latitude. Essential Job Functions Instruct athletes in fundamental skills, strategy, and training necessary for individual and team success while promoting the Pursuing Victory with Honor Program. Maintain discipline, address grievances, and foster morale and cooperation. Establish the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by staff and supervise their performance and the overall functioning of the sport program. Assist the athletic director in recruiting and retaining coaches, scheduling athletic contests, promoting the sport within the school community, and enhancing the sport program. Ensure the sport venue is safe and that all equipment is regulated, properly maintained, and inventoried. Coordinate supervision of student‑athletes in all areas of play, locker rooms, and any other venue used by the sport. Maintain open communication with faculty, staff, and parents; advise student‑athletes on academics; assist with college recruiting and scholarship applications in conjunction with the athletic director and guidance staff. Perform other job‑related tasks as deemed necessary or as requested by the principal or the athletic director. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required Personal self‑discipline, adaptability, and flexibility in routine and unexpected situations. Good judgment and accurate verbal and written communication. Appropriate sense of humor. Knowledge and understanding of effective teaching techniques and child psychology. Proper grooming and dress as stated in the faculty handbook. Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines. Physical Demands Regular standing, sitting, walking, hand use, reaching, talking, and hearing. Ability to lift or move up to 50 pounds. Good vision for close and distance tasks. Ability to stand outdoors in heat and cold, and to work evenings and weekends. Reasonable accommodations provided for disabilities. Evaluation Performance is evaluated according to procedures developed by the Diocese of Phoenix and Notre Dame Preparatory under the direction of the principal. Terms of Employment Stipend position based on the season of the sport coached. Base salaries and stipends are established by the Leadership Team under the guidance of the Diocese of Phoenix. A schedule of mandatory days and additional responsibilities is provided before the start of a new school year. Minimum Qualification Preference given to Catholic teachers. Must meet Diocese of Phoenix employment requirements. Completed Safe Environment Training and signed Code of Conduct. Arizona Fingerprint clearance completed. Current Arizona State driver’s license is desirable. Good physical condition, initiative, creativity, problem‑solving skills, judgment in handling personalities, active listening, positive attitude in normal and crisis situations, cooperative teamwork, delegation ability, and knowledge of teaching techniques and child psychology.
