Senior Mechanical Designer - MEP/Building Systems (West Palm Beach)

Senior Mechanical Designer — MEP / Building Systems

JLRD Engineering | West Palm Beach or Merritt Island, Florida | Full-Time

Build Something Bigger Than Your Next Project

If you're an experienced Mechanical Designer who wants greater project ownership, exposure to sophisticated building systems, and the opportunity to make a visible impact within a growing engineering firm, JLRD Engineering may be worth a conversation.

JLRD is an established, privately owned MEP and Fire Protection consulting engineering firm headquartered in West Palm Beach, Florida , with an additional office in Merritt Island on Florida's Space Coast .

We deliver sophisticated building-systems engineering across healthcare, education, federal/government, aviation, commercial, and other technically demanding environments.

We're growing and looking for a Senior Mechanical Designer who can bring strong HVAC and mechanical design expertise, sound technical judgment, and leadership to our mechanical team.

This isn't simply another production design position. You'll have the opportunity to take ownership of mechanical design, work on complex projects, collaborate directly with engineers and project leadership, and help mentor developing designers.

Why JLRD?

We believe experienced designers should have the opportunity to do meaningful work while being recognized and rewarded for the expertise they bring to the organization.

JLRD offers:

• Highly competitive compensation aligned with your experience, technical expertise, and level of responsibility
• 100% employer-paid employee health insurance premium
• 3% Safe Harbor non-elective 401(k) employer contribution
• Half-day Fridays year-round
• Annual bonus opportunity
• Professional development and credential support
• Direct interaction with engineers, project leaders, clients, and firm leadership
• Diverse, technically challenging projects
• An environment where experienced designers can have a meaningful impact

What You'll Do

As a Senior Mechanical Designer, you'll take an active role in the design and delivery of HVAC and mechanical building systems from concept through construction .

You'll develop mechanical systems for sophisticated commercial and institutional facilities while coordinating closely with mechanical engineers, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, architectural, and other project disciplines.

You'll also have opportunities to:

• Take ownership of mechanical design for assigned projects and scopes
• Develop HVAC plans, details, schedules, and construction documents
• Perform heating and cooling load calculations
• Design ductwork and hydronic piping systems
• Assist with HVAC equipment selection and system sizing
• Develop ventilation and exhaust systems
• Coordinate mechanical systems with other building disciplines
• Apply applicable mechanical, energy, and building-code requirements
• Participate in field investigations and document existing conditions
• Support construction administration, including submittals and RFIs
• Work directly with engineers, project managers, architects, and project teams
• Provide technical guidance and mentoring to developing designers
• Contribute to JLRD's continued technical and organizational growth

What We're Looking For

We're more interested in demonstrated capability than checking every box .

Strong candidates will have:

• 5+ years of relevant mechanical design experience in MEP/building systems
• Strong experience designing HVAC systems for commercial or institutional buildings
• Proficiency with Revit
• Experience with heating and cooling load calculations
• Experience with ductwork, ventilation, and mechanical system design
• Working knowledge of applicable mechanical, energy, and building codes
• Experience developing coordinated construction documents
• Ability to independently manage assigned design scopes
• Strong communication and multidisciplinary coordination skills

An engineering or technical degree is valued, but demonstrated MEP mechanical design capability and experience are equally important.

Experience That Would Be a Plus

You don't need to have all of these to be considered.

Experience with healthcare/AHCA, education, federal/government, aviation, mission-critical facilities, TRACE 700, HAP, chilled-water and hot-water systems, Navisworks/BIM coordination, energy modeling, complex renovations, or construction administration would be especially valuable.

Most importantly, we're looking for a designer who can combine technical expertise, accountability, attention to detail, collaboration, and good judgment.

Why South Florida?

For candidates considering relocation, West Palm Beach and Florida's Space Coast offer an exceptional combination of career opportunity and quality of life.

Enjoy year-round sunshine, beautiful beaches, boating, saltwater fishing, golf, outdoor recreation, and a thriving arts and cultural scene , including museums, performing arts, live music, dining, and entertainment.

There's also an important financial advantage: Florida has no individual state income tax. Depending on where you're relocating from and your income, that can mean thousands of dollars in annual savings that stay in your pocket rather than going toward state income taxes.

For an experienced professional considering a move, Florida offers the opportunity to advance your career while enjoying a lifestyle that's difficult to match.

Interested, But Not Actively Looking?

That's okay.
