Executive Director

The Executive Director serves as the chief executive and chief fundraising officer of Open Doors, providing strategic leadership to advance the organization's mission of serving individuals experiencing homelessness and other hardship through low-barrier shelter, navigation, and supportive services. Working in partnership with the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for ensuring the organization's long‑term sustainability through philanthropic development, sound financial stewardship, operational excellence, strategic partnerships, and effective governance. The Executive Director serves as the public face of the organization, cultivating relationships with donors, government partners, foundations, businesses, faith communities, and the broader community. The Executive Director directly supervises the Operations Manager, Operations & Administrative Coordinator, Marketing & Development Coordinator, and Client Services Advocate. Open Doors operates critical, year‑round services that support some of the community's most vulnerable residents. This position requires a mission‑driven executive who is equally comfortable cultivating major donors, leading organizational strategy, responding to operational challenges, and representing the organization publicly in a variety of unique capacities. Duties Provide strategic leadership and vision for the organization in partnership with the Board. Lead implementation of the organization’s strategic plan and established priorities. Foster a culture grounded in Belonging, Accountability, Creativity, and Kindness. Ensure policies, practices, and systems support long‑term sustainability. Promote excellence through thoughtful leadership, management, and development. Lead organizational planning, performance improvement, and risk management. Development & Community Investment Foster a culture of philanthropy throughout the organization. Develop and execute a comprehensive annual fundraising strategy. Cultivate, solicit, and steward major donor relationships. Build relationships with foundations, corporations, civic groups, and partners. Partner with the Board of Directors to strengthen philanthropy and donor engagement. Expand community investment through annual giving, major gifts, planned giving, etc. Identify and pursue new funding opportunities with a focus on recurring opportunities. Community Relations Serve as primary spokesperson for Open Doors. Build strategic partnerships across government, nonprofits, civic organizations, etc. Strengthen public awareness and community support of Open Doors' mission. Lead advocacy efforts consistent with organizational priorities. Maintain productive relationships with a diverse set of stakeholders. Board Governance Serve as an adviser to the Board of Directors. Prepare materials and attend Board meetings. Support Board governance, development, and planning. Ensure timely communication regarding organizational opportunities and risks. People Operations Lead, supervise, and coach the core team. Build and maintain a high‑performing, mission‑driven workforce. Ensure effective performance management and professional development. Oversee human resources policies and organizational development initiatives. Ensure appropriate staffing and succession planning. Operations & Risk Management Provide executive oversight for all programs and operations. Ensure uninterrupted delivery of emergency shelter and services. Oversee City Contract, Memorandum of Agreements, and Vendor Agreements. Manage the organization’s insurance coverage. Lead emergency preparedness, crisis response, and coordinate with external agencies. Ensure efficient and responsible use of organizational resources. Develop annual operating and project budgets. Monitor financial performance and internal controls. Coordinate with account partners, treasurer, and committee. Authorize contracts and major expenditures consistent with policy. Ensure compliance with grants, contractual requirements, and legal requirements. Skills & Qualifications Required Bachelor's in nonprofit management, business, or public administration, or social work. Demonstrated executive or senior leadership experience. Proven success securing philanthropic investment through multiple streams. Experience managing organizational budgets and financial strategy. Experience supervising and developing professional staff. Exceptional communication and relationship‑building skills. Ability to lead through complexity, ambiguity, and change. Preferred Experience leading a nonprofit organization. Experience in homelessness, housing, behavioral health, healthcare, or a similar field. Experiencing working closely with a governing board. Experience managing government contracts or grant‑funded programs. Knowledge of the Harrisonburg‑Rockingham Community. $60,000–$80,000 annually Monthly Insurance Stipend 16 paid holidays annually 12 days of PTO annually 12 days of sick leave annually Flexible Schedule/Compensatory Time* *While the position is generally expected to work 40 hours per week, the nature of the Executive Director role may require additional time during certain phases or periods of heightened organizational need.
