Cincinnati Children's 4th Year Externship (LEND Fellowship Opportunity)

4th Year Audiology Externship We offer three full‑time paid clinical externships that start in mid‑May. One position is a Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) fellowship, which focuses on leadership and development in addition to clinical experience. All candidates will be considered for the LEND position unless they have already completed the LEND traineeship. Externs are hired for an approximately 11‑month competency‑based experience that includes rotations at the main campus and a neighborhood location. Students will have a primary preceptor at each location and participate in several specialty areas of pediatric audiology, including: Inpatient Hearing aids Cochlear implants Vestibular assessment Bone conduction devices Electrophysiologic assessment Auditory processing evaluations Students interested in a 4th‑year placement should submit the following documentation in the order listed below (as one PDF document): Cover Letter/Letter of Intent Include a paragraph about why you are interested in LEND. If you have already completed the LEND traineeship, mention that in your letter. Resume Three Recommendation Forms are required and can be completed via the CCHMC Recommendation Form. This form is a substitute for a letter of recommendation. The individual filling out the form should be able to speak to your clinical skills. LEND Training Program The Cincinnati LEND Program is part of a national network of 52 LEND programs. The overall mission is to improve the health of infants, children, and adolescents with or at risk for neurodevelopmental and related disabilities, including autism spectrum disorders. In addition to clinical competencies, LEND trainees gain leadership skills, interdisciplinary collaboration, research experience, and enhanced problem‑solving skills, boosting professional growth and marketability after graduation. Application Timeline Application deadline: September 16, 2026 Video interviews begin September 22, 2026 Final interviews will be held virtually on September 30, 2026 Virtual Information Session A virtual information session and Q&A will be hosted by Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Division of Audiology. It will cover externship opportunities, including the LEND trainee program. Interested candidates are encouraged to attend on Friday, July 31, 2026 at 12pm (EST). Externship Information Primary Practice Setting: Hospital – Multispecialty medical center Stipend: Offered Interview travel compensation: No Vacation days: 20 Continuing education opportunities: Yes Start date: May 2027 Expected hours/days per week: 40 hours / 4 days Travel to satellite centers required: Yes (15–30 miles) Orientation to clinical policies, patient rights, and quality systems: Provided Pre‑required skills: Completion of a 3rd‑year AuD program or a 2nd‑year AuD program if accelerated Successful progress on the American Academy of Audiology’s Core Competencies Learning objectives during the externship: Proficiency in diagnostic testing and management of treatment plans for infants and children Improved clinical decision‑making skills Adaptability, motivation, and a positive attitude Clinical opportunities (frequency indicated): Regularly: hearing screenings, acoustic reflexes, auditory processing evaluations, hearing aid selection/fitting, hearing aids dispensed, cochlear implant evaluations, vestibular assessments, evoked potential assessments, and otoacoustic emissions Everyday: pediatric evaluations for infants/toddlers, school‑age, tympanometry, and OAE Rarely: adult hearing evaluations, industrial/horizon conservation, cochlear implant rehabilitation, vestibular rehabilitation, and tinnitus assessments Never: intra‑operative monitoring cases, audiologic rehabilitation, tinnitus rehabilitation, and cerumen management Research opportunities: LEND traineeship includes the opportunity to participate in ongoing research projects with an established faculty mentor and team.
