Parks Interpretive Specialist 2 (Deception Pass State Park)

Job Title Parks Interpretive Specialist 2 – Oak Harbor, WA Position: Permanent. This position is not eligible for telework, as physical on‑site presence is required. Job Description Under the supervision of the Operations Ranger, this position provides cultural and environmental education to the visiting public, students, and community groups. It supports the operation of the Deception Pass Area and creates opportunities for the public to make meaningful connections with park resources, fostering stewardship for future generations. Responsibilities Develop and conduct interpretive opportunities throughout the park and community. Coordinate school and tour groups throughout the area. Lead AmeriCorps Interpretive Naturalist and Skillbridge interns. Recruit and train new interpretive volunteers and interns. Evaluate current guided and self‑guided interpretation; improve, update, or suggest changes as needed. Ensure interpretive facilities and structures are safe, clean, and well maintained, including the Civilian Conservation Corps Interpretive Center, Discovery Center, amphitheater, and other structures. Collect, tabulate, and report annual interpretive statistics. Monitor multiple budget sources to purchase materials and supplies for interpretive use. Required Qualifications – Options Option 1: Four years’ experience in cultural or natural/earth science or interpretation, and two years’ experience in natural history or historical interpretation through operation of an interpretive facility or curatorial experience, and a valid unrestricted driver’s license. Option 2: Bachelor’s degree in interpretation, environmental education, earth science, history, or related field; two years’ experience in natural history or historical interpretation through operation of an interpretive facility or curatorial experience; and a valid unrestricted driver’s license. Option 3: Master’s degree; one year’s experience in natural history or historical interpretation through operation of an interpretive facility or curatorial experience; and a valid unrestricted driver’s license. Option 4: Combination of related education and experience up to four years in the field of cultural or natural/earth science or interpretation, and two years’ experience in natural history or historical interpretation through operation of an interpretive facility or curatorial experience; and a valid unrestricted driver’s license. Desired Qualifications Knowledge of interpretive methods and thematic design principles. Experience in public presentation and speaking. Knowledge of environmental science. Ability to work and engage with volunteers and partners. Ability to perform routine janitorial and minor maintenance duties. Knowledge of operating equipment such as AV components and projectors, and software such as Adobe InDesign and PowerPoint. Knowledge of state government rules and regulations. Knowledge of State Parks rules and regulations. Uniform and Working Conditions All Parks Interpretive Specialists wear a full uniform issued to the Park Ranger series, including shirts, pants, headwear, sweater, belt, necktie, jacket, and badge. Core working hours are 40 hours per week, with possible evenings, weekends, and holidays. The schedule varies by season and events. The position requires frequent travel between multiple parks and statewide travel for meetings and training in diverse weather conditions.
