THE POSITION
The State of Connecticut ( , Department of V eterans Affairs (DVA ( ) is now hiring for a Buildings And Grounds Patrol Officer ( to join their team, in the Safety and Security Department. This position will maintain the safety and security of the agency, including Veteran patients, Veteran residents, visitors, and staff.

Enforce rules and regulations;
Assist patients, residents, staff, and visitors;
Guard the entrances and exits of the DVA campus to prevent trespassing, vandalism, theft of State and private property, and other violations;
Perform vehicle and foot patrols of the DVA campus buildings, cemeteries, and other State locations; and
Utilize multiple cameras, access control systems, and an intricate fire alarm system to monitor the DVA to deter crime while maintaining safety and security.

For over 160 years, DVA has been caring for its veterans and their dependents. As a Department, we believe in "serving those who have served." This is accomplished through our: Office of Advocacy and Assistance, Residential Facility, Healthcare Center, and Cemetery and Burial Services.
The DVA has supported Connecticut Veterans and continues this tradition with Residential and Healthcare programming on our campus in Rocky Hill. There are two paths for residency at the DVA:
Residential Facility: offers temporary, supportive living with programming designed to return Connecticut Veterans to independent living in the community;
Sgt. John L. Levitow Healthcare Center: a state-of-the-art medical facility that offers long-term care for veterans with chronic, disabling conditions who require 24-hour assistance.
When you walk through the doors of the Healthcare Center (HCC), one immediately feels a sense of community, comfort, and camaraderie. Our highly trained staff is dedicated to providing compassionate care to meet the unique needs of Veteran patients, built on the foundation of integrity, honor, and respect. PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
At a state institution, university or school, or facility this class is accountable for providing basic security services designed to ensure the control and safety of clients, students, employees and the visiting public.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Enforces regulations relating to parking and traffic control as established by assigned agency;
Directs traffic on state property;
Issues tickets for violations;
Gives information and assistance to visitors;
Guards entrances and exits to prevent trespass, vandalism, theft and other violations;
Performs routine vehicle and foot patrol duty and monitors security and alarm systems to detect theft and other criminal acts;
Provides security escorts;
Provides first aid when necessary;
Performs dispatching and record keeping functions at a desk post;
At a state hospital, assists in maintaining order among patients;
Assists in searching for missing patients;
At an agency or institution, may oversee the activities of fellow officers as designated;
May assist in fire prevention and fire fighting activities;
Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience conducting vehicle/foot patrols, preventing trespassing.
Experience writing incident reports.
Experience being dispatched to calls for service and using radio communication systems.
Experience working with people with substance abuse, mental health, or anger issues.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
Incumbents in this class may be required to obtain and maintain a Standard First Aid Certificate and/or CPR certification.
CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS
In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for appointment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents in this class must have general good health, be free from any disease or injury which would impair health or usefulness and possess and retain sufficient physical strength, stamina, agility, endurance and visual and auditory acuity required to perform all the duties of the class.
Applicants may be required to pass a physical examination.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents in this class may be exposed to the attendant discomforts of working outdoors, to the effort of prolonged periods of walking and standing while on foot patrol and/or guard duty, and to some danger of injury in performing the duties of the class.
