Job Responsibilities Technical Expertise Perform routine procedures of a Medical Lab Scientist, including collecting and analyzing data for patient care decisions. Maintain knowledge of procedures and maintain strong technical proficiency. Participate in patient testing as needed to meet department needs. Assist and support technical staff with routine testing, preventive maintenance, technical studies, and troubleshooting. Support innovation through new test development and implementation of new testing platforms. Lab Operations Ensure quality in all aspects of laboratory operation, coordinating with leadership on testing and reporting issues. Assist in selecting appropriate methodologies, verifying procedures, and establishing performance characteristics. Ensure procedure manuals are current, reviewed annually, and that all employees are trained on revisions. Personnel Management & Development Supervise reporting personnel and provide input on recruitment, hiring, onboarding, training, development, and retention. Mentor and develop assigned staff; identify and correct personnel management issues. Conduct ongoing evaluation and mentoring of direct reports, including annual performance evaluations. Ensure staff are appropriately trained and support continuing education goals. Communicate departmental and medical center initiatives, priorities, standards, and policies. Regulatory & Compliance Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory requirements such as TJC, HIPAA, and other accreditation standards. Design and implement programs, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance. Track relevant laws and regulations and prepare compliance reports as necessary. Maintain safety standards and enforce compliance with infection control and safe work practices. Budget Management Assist with department fiscal responsibilities, monitor budget expenditures, and identify and manage variances. Track revenue, expense, and allocations; provide applicable reports; assist in preparing and maintaining the fiscal budget. Research information for major purchases. Quality Assurance Manage the quality of testing processes through audits. Identify and lead improvement activities within and across laboratory disciplines. Provide day‑to‑day operational leadership in a CAP certified laboratory or common functional department. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience. 4+ years of technical experience in a related laboratory setting. Demonstrated leadership experience. Qualified by CLIA/CAP standards minimally as a general supervisor. Preferred: Certification by a national laboratory accrediting agency.
