Position: Echo Vascular Ultrasound Technician - Weekends/Nights

Job Summary:

Under the supervision of the ultrasound supervisor, the Echo Vascular Ultrasound Technician assists radiologists and other physicians in obtaining high-quality scans and images essential for diagnosing patients undergoing ultrasound exams. The technician provides patient care across all age groups, including adults, pediatrics, and neonates, and ensures compliance with Radiology Information System (RIS) policies and procedures.

Regulatory Requirements:

• Must meet the requirements for registry by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography.

Preferred Qualifications:

• At least six months of experience in performing ultrasound exams preferred.
• Registry eligibility is required.

Principal Responsibilities:

• Implement age-specific care and interaction with patients.
• Attend departmental orientation and annual in-service training on age-specific care.
• Participate in hospital performance improvement projects.
• Adhere to established work schedules and complete all assigned tasks prior to clocking out.
• Provide basic patient care and comfort, anticipating patient needs and establishing rapport.
• Explain ultrasound procedures to patients and their families to gain trust and understanding.
• Instruct patients on positioning and breathing techniques to optimize exam quality.
• Identify and respond to life-threatening situations within the scope of practice.
• Transport patients to and from the ultrasound department as necessary.
• Ensure accuracy of patient information and charge exams appropriately.
• Obtain and review pertinent patient histories and clinical data for optimal diagnostic outcomes.
• Perform ultrasound exams following established protocols and techniques.
• Recognize significant clinical information affecting the sonographic examination.
• Produce, assess, and interpret ultrasound images and related data for medical diagnosis.
• Demonstrate expertise in specialist ultrasound areas, providing written or oral summaries of findings.
• Maintain equipment performance logs and ensure equipment safety and infection control protocols are followed.
• Facilitate quality assurance and infection control measures in the ultrasound department.
• Maintain adequate stock of supplies and dispose of waste materials correctly.
• Protect patient privacy and rights in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
• Confirm two forms of patient identification prior to exams.
• Continuously update knowledge through ongoing education and training in the field.

Working Conditions:

• Long periods of sitting are required.
• May require working in stressful conditions.
• Potential exposure to diseases and hazardous materials.

Physical Requirements:

• Hand and Arm Use: Ability to manipulate transducers, operate a calculator, and use a computer keyboard.
• Lifting and Carrying: Ability to lift and move case supplies (10-25 pounds) and assist in patient transfer.
• Pushing and Pulling: Ability to push/pull equipment (up to 100 pounds on wheels).
• Standing/Walking/Sitting/Climbing: Capable of standing for two hours, walking throughout the hospital, sitting for extended periods, and climbing stairs as needed.
• Sensory Requirements: Ability to handle patients gently, perceive pulse, temperature, texture, and clearly hear alarms and conversations.
• Vision: Must read and interpret medical documents and exam results effectively.
• Body Movements: Ability to bend, stoop, squat, and twist as necessary when positioning equipment and assisting patients.

Mental Requirements:

• Mathematics: Capability to perform basic arithmetic for calculating and interpreting results.
• Memory: Ability to recall testing protocols and interpretative knowledge of test results.
• Language Ability: Proficient in reading, writing, and verbally communicating in a clear and effective manner with patients and healthcare staff.
