Controller – Finance & Accounting

BHRS Companies is a Jacksonville, Florida-based, integrated real-property services firm serving multi-location commercial occupiers across the Southeast. Through our family of operating companies, we deliver commercial construction and construction management, modular building, site and civil work, and licensed commercial real estate brokerage, with speed-to-market, financial risk mitigation, and single-source accountability from site selection through construction. BHRS Companies provides shared administration, compliance, IT, HR, finance, and estimating support so each operating company executes with discipline and consistency.

Reporting to the President, the Controller is the senior finance and accounting leader for BHRS Companies. The Controller ensures GAAP compliance, leads the close, revenue recognition, and internal controls, and provides the job- and division-level analysis that supports open-book project management through closeout. This is a build-and-scale role with direct access to the President. As BHRS grows, the scope of the role is expected to grow with it, and advancement into broader finance leadership follows company growth, business need, and individual results. The Controller leads the Staff Accountant.

Primary Responsibilities

• Own the month-end close, account reconciliations, and financial statement preparation across multiple operating entities.
• Establish and enforce accounting methods, policies, and principles, and maintain the chart of accounts, including entity- and job-level reporting.
• Prepare percentage-of-completion revenue, WIP schedules, and over/under-billing analysis, and reconcile WIP to the general ledger monthly.
• Oversee job costing, change-order accounting, retainage, subcontractor payables, and lien waiver processing.
• Produce management reporting: job- and division-level profitability, contribution margin, overhead allocation, and budget-vs-actual variance analysis.
• Conduct regular analysis of margin performance, expenses, key financial ratios, and profitability, and advise on pricing, budgeting, and investment planning.
• Support annual budgeting, forecasting, and regulatory reporting, plus cash forecasting and liquidity planning.
• Prepare disbursement and capital expenditure requests in line with approval authorities.
• Coordinate with the outside CPA on preparation, review, tax, and audit requests, and prepare reporting packages for external stakeholders.
• Maintain internal controls, including segregation of duties and review of staff work.
• Manage multi-entity accounting, including intercompany transactions.
• Supervise, train, and develop the Staff Accountant.

Skills & Qualifications

• Command of GAAP for contractors, including cost-to-cost percentage-of-completion revenue recognition.
• Multi-entity accounting experience, including intercompany transactions and consolidation.
• Management accounting skills: contribution margin, overhead allocation, and variance analysis.
• Advanced Excel, data analysis and visualization tools (e.g., Power BI), and accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage).
• Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills, with the ability to explain financial results to non-financial leaders.
• Ability to manage multiple, changing priorities in a fast-paced environment with limited supervision.
• History of success leading, training, and developing others.
• Willingness to be hands-on and directly involved in all accounting functions.

Experience & Other Requirements

• 3–5 years of progressive accounting experience, or demonstrated skills and achievement sufficient to substitute.
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting required; Master's degree preferred.
• Willingness to sit for the CPA exam within 36 months of hire strongly preferred.
• Construction, real estate development, or project-based services experience required.
• Internal controls experience, including documentation and testing, and experience reviewing the work of others.
• Commitment to continued professional growth in accounting and business finance.
• Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record required.
