Software Development Engineer, Bottlerocket

Salary: $143,700 - 194,400 per year Requirements:

• We require 3+ years of professional software development experience outside of internships.
• We require 2+ years of experience in system design or architecture, including reliability and scaling for new or existing systems.
• We require 1+ years of experience as a software development engineer or in a closely related role.
• We require 1+ years of experience designing and building large-scale, multi-tiered, multi-threaded, embedded, or distributed software applications, tools, systems, or services using C#, C++, Java, or Perl.
• We require 1+ years of object-oriented design experience.
• We require a bachelors degree, or foreign equivalent, in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field.
• We require experience programming in at least one software language.
• We prefer 3+ years of full software development lifecycle experience, including coding standards, code reviews, source control, build processes, testing, and operations.
• We prefer a bachelors degree in computer science or equivalent.

• We design, implement, and maintain Rust-based operating system components, including system services, API servers, and update infrastructure for Bottlerocket.
• We own features from design through production, working independently on ambiguous technical challenges.
• We contribute to and maintain open-source code on GitHub, taking part in public code reviews and community collaboration.
• We investigate and resolve complex systems issues across the kernel, userspace, container runtimes, and orchestrator integrations such as EKS and ECS.
• We build and improve CI/CD pipelines, release tooling, and automated testing frameworks that support safe and fast OS delivery.
• We strengthen security defaults and implement OS-level protections that reduce customer operational overhead while preserving flexibility.
• We work cross-functionally with EKS, ECS, and security teams to shape integrations and align on container host requirements.
• We mentor engineers through code reviews, design input, and technical guidance to raise the teams quality standards.
• We participate in on-call rotations and operational excellence practices for production container infrastructure at scale.
• We write technical design documents, contribute to roadmap planning, and communicate trade-offs clearly to stakeholders.
