Precision Gear-Cutting Machinist (Hobbing & Shaping)

Direct-hire role with our manufacturing client in Kansas City, KS . $30–$35/hour DOE . Immediate start available.

A day in the life

You arrive on first shift, review the job traveler and blueprints, confirm gear specifications (diametral pitch, module, circular pitch, pressure angles, and measurement-over-wires), and set up your gear hobbing or shaping machine. Throughout the day, you fine-tune tooling and machine settings, run in-process checks with micrometers and gauges, troubleshoot when needed, and keep production moving safely and to spec. Before you clock out, you complete routine maintenance and 5S on your area to ensure the next job starts strong.

What you’ll do

• Set up, operate, and monitor manual and CNC gear-cutting equipment to produce helical, spur, worm gears, and splines.
• Manufacture parts to print, work orders, and quality standards; keep to schedule.
• Conduct in-process inspections to verify dimensional accuracy and material compliance.
• Select appropriate cutting tools, fixtures, materials, and machine parameters.
• Interpret blueprints, gear data, job travelers, and manufacturing instructions.
• Perform routine upkeep; maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
• Troubleshoot setup, tooling, machining, and quality issues.
• Follow established safety, quality, and production procedures.

Tools and equipment you’ll run

Manual and CNC gear-manufacturing assets, including gear hobbing machines, gear shaping machines, worm and thread milling equipment, and CNC-controlled gear-cutting machinery.

Common shop and precision metrology tools include:

• Calipers and micrometers (including large-capacity micrometers)
• Vernier measuring tools
• Dial indicators
• Height gauges and gauge blocks
• Hand and power tools
• Other machining and inspection instruments

• First Shift
• Overtime as needed
• Based in Kansas City, KS

What you bring

• High school diploma or GED; technical training/certification in machining, machine or industrial technology preferred.
• 5+ years of hands-on gear manufacturing, including machine setup and gear cutting; manual gear-cutting setup experience preferred.
• Experience machining steels, stainless, bronze, cast materials, and nylon.
• 5+ years using precision metrology in a manufacturing or machining environment.
• Ability to read gear nomenclature and technical specifications (DP, module, circular pitch, pressure angles, measurement over wires).
• Proficiency setting change gears, hob head settings, tooling, and related adjustments.
• Strong shop math: geometry, measurement, conversions, and basic trigonometry.
• Skilled with precision instruments: large micrometers, verniers, height gauges, etc.
• Capable of interpreting engineering drawings, blueprints, and manufacturing docs.
• Proven troubleshooting/problem -solving across setup, tooling, quality, and production.
• Clear communication; collaborates well with production, quality, and supervision.
• Physical capability: lift/move up to 50 lbs; stand/walk for extended periods; frequent bending, reaching, and handling of parts/tools; safe work in an active manufacturing environment.
• We may consider an equivalent blend of education, technical training, and demonstrated experience in place of specific requirements.
