Tandem Coffee BakerAt Tandem Coffee, we believe in the power of great coffee, exceptional baked goods, and fostering a community vibe that keeps people coming back. Since opening in 2012 in Portland, Maine, we've grown into a community hub for locals and visitors alike. We roast our own coffee and have two cafe locations in Portland - our first is on Anderson St in Portland's popular East Bayside which operates as a tasting room to our roastery there with elevated coffee service and selections. The second is a James Beard-nominated bakery on Congress St in Portland's West End that has been featured in Bon Appétit.Tandem as a whole is a team of passionate, creative folks who care about quality, kindness, and a lot of humor. Join us in shaping what's next at either of our cafe locations or in our roastery!What You'll DoWe're looking for an experienced baker who can / has:At least 3 to 5 years of experience baking pastries, cakes, cookies, breads, custards, and other bakery items within a high-volume environmentTeam-oriented work ethic and ability to understand how to manage your feelings around other people, ability to listen to others, and to ask questionsUnderstand, maintain, follow recipes and practices that adhere to and uphold Tandem's aesthetic and quality commitmentHave respect for and a desire to be involved in the majority of bakery operations and atmosphereFamiliarity using large-scale kitchen equipment such as mixers, scales, ovens, stove, blenders, knives, food processors and other equipmentPossess excellent communication skills with coworkers and managers, have the ability to bring any inventory, production or equipment needs to the management's attention in a timely mannerDemonstrate excellent time management skills with the ability to take direction as well as self-direct during slow periods.Work with a sense of urgency, creativity and ability to make decisions with consideration and professionalism.Be comfortable asking questions and receiving direction and critique, both in the moment, as well as in scheduled check-ins and reviewsQualifications:Consistent attendance and punctuality with availability both early mornings (4 am), weekends and holidaysComfortable working in an open and bustling kitchen around many other employees, as well as front facing to customersAbility to follow prep lists, recipes, written and verbal directionAbility to mix and shape pastries by hand, and understand how to use commercial ovens and stovesConsistent attention to detail, cleanliness, and organizationAbility to perform physical tasks - lift 50 lbs above waist and stand for long periodsFollow food service safety protocolsWhat You'll GetAs a part of our team, we're excited to offer…$20/hourly wage + percentage of tips + annual bonusAccrued Paid time offMonthly contribution towards optional health and dental insurance401k matching after one yearDiscount on Tandem products and free coffee beans and drinksFun team gatherings, including our annual retreat!This is a full-time, hourly position that reports to the Kitchen Manager.
