Boiler Technician I, II, III

This is a 245 day position. Pay Schedule: Grade 111, 114, 115 This position is for the 2026 - 2027 school year.

Position Summary

Under general supervision, performs skilled work in the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of boilers and associated mechanical systems across District facilities. Ensures the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of heating systems to maintain comfortable and safe learning environments for students and staff. Performs preventive maintenance, responds to service calls, and assists with inspections and regulatory compliance.

Minimum Requirements

Position Levels: This position includes three levels; Boiler Technician I, Boiler Technician II, and Boiler Technician III. Placement is based on experience and demonstrated competencies.

Education: High school Diploma or equivalent is required. Completion of an accredited boiler, industrial maintenance, or HVAC technical training program is preferred.

Certification/License: Must possess a valid South Carolina driver's license. National stationary engineer/boiler operator license is preferred.

Work Experience:

• Boiler Technician I (Apprentice). Zero (0) to two (2) years of experience with boiler systems, HVAC, military, facilities, or general maintenance duties; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and certification that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
• Boiler Technician II (Journeyman). Three (3) to five (5) years of experience in commercial boiler systems and related controls.
• Boiler Technician III (Senior Technician). Six (6) to ten (10) years of experience in commercial boiler systems and related controls.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of boiler principles, pumps, controls, safety devices, use of proper tools, diagnostic techniques, and testing equipment.
• Working knowledge of applicable local and state boiler codes and standards, including OSHA safety standards, and EPA environmental regulations related to assigned duties.
• Knowledge of District maintenance procedures and school safety and security practices.
• Knowledge and use of computerized applications relevant to the position.
• Skill in operating and maintaining hand and power tools and related boiler equipment in compliance with OSHA safety practices.
• Progressively proficient skills in preventive maintenance; troubleshooting; and repair of boilers, heating systems, and associated pump, valve, and control systems.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, piping diagrams, control schematics, and technical manuals. Ability to use diagnostic tools, test gauges, etc.
• Ability to estimate time, labor, and materials; maintain accurate records of work orders, labor, and materials used; and complete documentation using the District computerized maintenance system.
• Ability to prioritize multiple work orders and complete assignments within established timelines.
• Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with administrators, custodial/maintenance staff, contractors, and school personnel.
• Ability to work independently and as a productive member of a team, manage frequent interruptions, and respond calmly in difficult or stressful situations.
• Ability to maintain high standards of organization, accuracy, and timeliness in exercising duties.

Essential Duties

Boiler Technician I (Apprentice).

• Performs routine inspections and basic maintenance of boilers and associated equipment under the direction of senior technicians.
• Learns boiler systems and assists higher-level technicians with repairs and adjustments.
• Operates hand and power tools, cleaning equipment, and basic test instruments in a safe and responsible manner. Maintains equipment and tools, ensuring they are in safe operating conditions and stored properly when not in use.
• Documents work performed using the District computerized maintenance management system.
• Follows all District safety procedures and environmental regulations.
• Maintains satisfactory or better performance evaluations demonstrating competency in assigned boiler and heating systems duties for an entry level position. Works towards obtaining a boiler operator license.

Boiler Technician II (Journeyman).

• Independently performs boiler and heating systems maintenance; performs skilled diagnosis and repair of boiler systems, pumps, valves, and heating systems across the District.
• Tests and adjusts heating systems for proper efficiency, safety shutdowns, and code compliance.
• Coordinates with building supervisors and maintenance staff for boiler-related work order requests and planned outages.
• Estimates materials, prepares requisitions, and ensures quality completion of assigned projects.
• Maintains boiler equipment inventories, operating logs, and performance records using the District computerized maintenance management system.
• Provides technical direction and on-the-job training to Boiler Technician I.
• Responds promptly to urgent boiler and heating system concerns during the workday and after hours, as necessary.
• Maintains satisfactory or better performance evaluations demonstrating competency in assigned boiler and HVAC duties for the Boiler Technician II position.

Boiler Technician III (Senior Technician).

• Performs advanced diagnosis and repair of complex boiler systems.
• Oversees boiler inspections to ensure compliance with safety, performance, efficiency, and code requirements; recommends replacements; assists with system upgrades as needed.
• Maintains an inventory of boiler parts and materials to provide prompt and efficient service to assigned locations. Documents all work completion and maintenance records using the District computerized maintenance management system.
• Provides leadership, technical guidance, and supervision of lower-level technicians as assigned.
• Maintains satisfactory or better performance evaluations demonstrating competency in assigned boiler and HVAC duties for the Boiler Technician III position.

• Demonstrates prompt, regular attendance and is available to work in person on-site during normal business hours. Available to work after hours for emergencies, project completion, and other tasks as requested by the supervisor.
• Willingly performs other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Upper Body Mobility: Ability to use hands to grasp and manipulate small objects; manipulate fingers; twist and bend at wrist and elbows; extend arms to reach outward and upward; use hands and arms to lift objects; turn, raise, and lower head.

Strength: Ability to lift, push, pull and/or carry objects which weigh twenty-five (25) or more pounds on a frequent basis.

Environmental Requirements: Ability to work independently; work cooperatively with others; work indoors; work outdoors as necessary for the position.

Additional Work Conditions and Physical Abilities: Physical ability to perform repair work including lifting, climbing, kneeling, and working in varied environments. Includes both indoor and outdoor work with exposure to dust, noise, extreme temperatures, and mechanical/electrical hazards, including the use of ladders at significant heights and in confined spaces.
