Minimum Requirements Minimum Eligibility Overview: Below are the minimum requirements as outlined by Massachusetts state law for police officer candidates, as well as the minimum requirements unique to the Brookline Police Department. As a non-Civil Service agency, the Brookline PD has the flexibility to establish department-specific criteria to help us identify the strongest and most aligned candidates for our team. These are the minimum qualifications required by state law to serve as a police officer in Massachusetts. All applicants must meet these baseline standards to be considered eligible. Be a U.S. Citizen (Birth or naturalization). Have the ability to obtain and maintain a valid Massachusetts Driver's License. Candidate must be 21 years of age to enter a Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC) Academy. Must have the ability to be POST Certified. Be able to obtain CJIS certification. Possess or have the ability to obtain and maintain an unrestricted Massachusetts Class A License to Carry a Firearm (LTC-A). Not be a convicted felon, or have convictions from another jurisdiction that would be treated as a felony in the Commonwealth. Not smoke and stay a non-smoker. Smoking of tobacco products is prohibited as outlined by G.L. c. 41 Section 101A of the Massachusetts General Laws. Must be able to pass the fitness test for entrance into the MPTC Police Academy. In addition to state standards, the Brookline PD has outlined minimum qualifications and preferences that reflect the needs, values, and expectations of our department and community. Must reside within 25 miles of Brookline, MA, within one year of employment. Possess a high school diploma or G.E.D. Certificate. Must pass the department-held fitness test. Must pass a background investigation. Must pass a medical exam, and written and oral psychological examinations. Receive a passing grade of 75%+ on the getbadged Entry Exam. Preference may be given to candidates who meet certain additional qualifications (such as residency, specialized training, education, or relevant experience). Salary & Compensation The Brookline PD offers a highly competitive salary and benefits package designed to support long-term career satisfaction. Salary for Patrol Officer: $83,159 - $133,463 (Education Dependent) Lateral Transfer Officers will get credit for time served. Experience and years of service will determine starting salary and vacation time. Benefits: Quinn Equivalent Educational Incentive: 10%-25% (eligibility is contingent upon various qualifying degrees). EMT Stipend. CIT Training Incentive. Longevity Pay. 13 Paid Holidays. 14-28 Vacation Days/Year. 4-9 Administrative Days/Year. 14 Sick Days/Year. Generous Compensatory Time-Off Benefit. 48+ Hours of Contractual In-Service Training Paid on Overtime Basis. Detail Rate: Day = $75/Hour, and Nights, Weekends, Holidays = $112.50. Pass a state mandated Physical Abilities Test (PAT).
