Job Title: General Production – Chemical Operator (Heavy Industrial) Job Description

This role works as a Chemical Operator in a heavy industrial environment, handling starch-based materials and operating production equipment. You will perform physically demanding tasks, follow strict safety and quality standards, and support continuous production by operating, monitoring, and cleaning equipment throughout 12‑hour rotating shifts.

Responsibilities

• Operate chemical processing and production equipment in a heavy industrial environment according to established procedures.

• Pack bags of starch, ensuring accurate weights and proper sealing to maintain product quality.

• Lift, carry, and handle 50‑pound bags of starch repeatedly throughout the shift.

• Climb stairs and empty 50‑pound bags of starch into mixers in a safe and controlled manner.

• Open and close valves on tanks to control the flow of materials during the production process.

• Run and monitor basic touch screen machine controls, making adjustments as needed to maintain optimal operation.

• Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) at all times to ensure safety, quality, and consistency.

• Maintain a clean and organized work area by sweeping, cleaning, and removing debris on a regular basis.

• Handle materials safely and efficiently, including staging, moving, and loading product as required.

• Monitor product quality and report any issues or irregularities to the appropriate personnel.

• Work proactively by looking for additional tasks and support needs during slower periods, rather than remaining idle.

• Meet production deadlines while maintaining a strong focus on quality and adherence to safety standards.

• Collaborate with team members and communicate clearly during shift changes to support continuous operations.

• Adhere to all safety rules, including the proper use of personal protective equipment and safe lifting techniques.

Essential Skills

• Ability to repeatedly lift and carry 50 pounds safely throughout a 12‑hour shift.

• Willingness and ability to work 12‑hour rotating shifts (4 days on, 3 days off, rotating days and nights).

• Experience in general production, chemical operation, or similar heavy industrial work environment.

• Background as a production operator or machine operator, with comfort using basic touch screen controls.

• Understanding of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and basic manufacturing principles.

• Strong work ethic, with a self‑driven and hard‑working approach to daily tasks.

• Ability to stay productive by seeking out additional work and responsibilities when primary tasks are completed.

• Attention to quality while working under tight deadlines in a fast‑paced environment.

• Comfort working in a hot, dirty, and physically demanding industrial setting.

• Basic material handling skills, including moving, staging, and organizing materials safely.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Previous experience as a chemical operator or in a heavy industrial production facility.

• Prior exposure to quality-focused production environments where accuracy and consistency are critical.

• Familiarity with cleaning and housekeeping standards in industrial or manufacturing settings.

• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions accurately and consistently.

• Strong reliability and dependability, with a commitment to showing up on time for all scheduled shifts.

• Team-oriented mindset with good communication skills to coordinate tasks with coworkers and supervisors.

Work Environment

The work takes place in a heavy industrial facility that is very hot and dirty, so comfort in this type of environment is essential. The role follows 12‑hour rotating shifts, alternating between days and nights, with a schedule of 4 days on and 3 days off each week. The pace is deadline-driven, and team members must maintain high quality standards while meeting production targets. The dress code includes work pants and shirts, and the company provides a hard hat and safety glasses. Steel-toe footwear is required and must be provided by the employee.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Charleston, SC.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $23.75 - $23.75/hr.
