Library Media Technician I #8-27

Library Media Technician I This recruitment is open and promotional, meaning all are welcome to apply and employees in permanent positions are eligible to receive seniority credit and promotional placement once passing all exams. The current vacancies are located at: Whittier Elementary School (7 hours per day, 5 days per week, 10 months per year.) Under the direction of the Principal, perform a variety of technical library duties in the acquisition, circulation, maintenance and distribution of books and instructional materials at an assigned elementary school; unpack, sort, process and distribute textbooks and instructional materials throughout the academic year; assist students and teachers in the selection, location and use of library materials and equipment; monitor inventory levels and make selections of library books, instructional materials and equipment as directed; perform general clerical work in support of the various functions of a library media center. The Library Media Technician I classification work independently and assume responsibility for the library collection, schedule and day-to-day operations of an elementary school library. Incumbents oversee textbook circulation including instructional materials throughout the academic year and perform specialized library media center functions such as classifying, cataloging, circulation, inventory, recovery of library books and related duties throughout the academic year. The Library Media Technician II position is assigned to a secondary school library and performs specialized library media center functions. Education and experience: Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and two years of general clerical or library experience. Some experience working with children in an educational or learning environment. Examination procedures and information: Exam weight supplemental questions: Qualifying Written Examination: 50% Qualifications Appraisal Interview: 50%. The supplemental questions to the application will be reviewed and rated for certification. These questions are required at the time of application and are qualifying. An eligibility list will be established for successful candidates which will be used to fill open positions during the life of the list. Examinations and interviews held to create the eligible list will be conducted virtually, using different online/internet platforms that require video recording or conferencing capabilities, as well as access to a computer with an internet connection and basic Microsoft Office Suite Software. The virtual written examination is tentatively scheduled for the week of August 3rd. All who are successful with the written test will be invited to the virtual qualifications appraisal interview (oral exam) which is tentatively scheduled for the week of August 10th. You will be notified via email as indicated on your application regarding your ability to participate in this recruitment. Applications will be reviewed for minimum requirements. However, Newport-Mesa Unified School District reserves the right to hold a competitive screening based on the number of applications and the needs of the District. Representative duties: Perform a variety of technical library duties in the acquisition, circulation, maintenance and distribution of library books, periodicals and materials at an assigned school site as directed; purchase new books and materials in accordance with district policies procedures; process new library books and instructional materials; oversee the cataloging of books and instructional materials. Unpack, sort, process and distribute textbooks and instructional materials needed for teachers and students throughout the year; track missing items; maintain records of ongoing textbook inventory for incoming and outgoing students; conduct school-wide textbook inventory and instructional materials throughout the academic year to assure compliance with Educational codes and requirements. Assist students, teachers and parents in the selection, location and use of library materials and equipment; respond to inquiries and provide information to students, teachers and parents; assist students in researching instructional materials for classroom use. Monitor inventory levels and make selections of library books, instructional materials and equipment; prepare purchase orders and requisitions for books and other library materials and supplies according to established procedures; receive and verify orders. Perform general clerical work such as typing, copying, entering information into a computer and maintaining various files and records; compile, prepare and type correspondence, lists, reports, records and a variety of other materials; maintain database information related to library materials, students, staff, textbooks and other related information. Provide general and reference assistance to students, teachers and parents; instruct and aid students and teachers in the use of various library equipment; instruct students in proper methods of utilizing library and reference materials; assist students with utilizing computers for research projects; answer reference and directional questions; monitor and maintain acceptable student behavior in the library. Circulate library materials; check library materials in and out to students and staff using an assigned computerized system; receive and process returned materials; inspect condition of materials returned; sort incoming books and prepare book carts; shelve returned books and materials according to the Dewey Decimal System and other library classifications. Evaluate and maintain orderliness of shelved materials; pull and repair materials in need of mending, binding, repairing or discarding; clean materials; glue, re-label or tape books as needed; evaluate collection of non-fiction library catalog content and relevance of information; discard outdated and non-circulated materials. Prepare, process and receive library materials and equipment orders; classify and process materials for introduction into the library materials collection; prepare labels; affix identification, security devices, book jackets and bar-code labels to materials; input related information into assigned computer system. Explain library policies and contact students, teachers and parents regarding overdue library materials; prepare overdue notices; receive lost book monies and other library fees; issue receipts and transfer funds to the School Administrative Assistant; validate and process refunds to students for lost books that have been returned after payment; process payments following established District procedures; count and record monies received as directed. Maintain records of periodical subscriptions; check in new periodicals and prepare for display or introduction to the library collection; route specific periodicals to designated personnel and departments. Promote and coordinate various reading programs such as Accelerated Reader or Reading Counts, awards, incentives and reading enrichment activities such as author's visits and read across America. Create and install displays; maintain Library media center bulletin boards. Plan and conduct lessons on library skills and research. Assist in maintaining library media center files and records; compile lists of overdue books, instructional aids and audio visual materials. Research and make appropriate selections of books to be purchased for the library; read age and theme appropriate books aloud to students. Operate a variety of office and library equipment including a bar scanner, calculator, printer, copier, laminator, smart board, a computer and assigned software; arrange for equipment repairs as needed. Maintain the library media center in a safe, clean and orderly condition; maintain appropriate and safe student behavior in the library. Perform minor repairs to damaged books and library materials; perform minor maintenance on audio visual equipment and arrange for repairs as needed. Monitor assigned library budgets and track the status of materials ordered; maintain a variety of records related to purchase orders, overdue books and assigned activities. Maintain routine records and reports; establish and maintain filing systems. Communicate with personnel and outside agencies to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns; confer with certificated staff regarding the purchase and selection of new library books. Coordinate special events such as fundraisers, book fairs, school-wide reading events, open house, back to school night and author visits as directed.
