Outside Machinist - Naval Base San Diego - 1st Shift

Job Description

• This role supports ship repair and mechanical work at Naval Base San Diego, focusing on hands-on maintenance, overhaul, installation, and testing of shipboard mechanical systems and components. The 2nd Class Outside Machinist works on vessels and related marine or industrial equipment, contributing to safe and reliable operation of pumps, valves, motors, deck machinery, steering gear, ventilation equipment, and other critical systems in an active ship repair environment.

Responsibilities

• Support the removal, disassembly, inspection, repair, reassembly, installation, and testing of shipboard mechanical equipment, including pumps, valves, motors, deck machinery, steering gear, and ventilation systems.
• Assist with the alignment and adjustment of mechanical components and systems to meet operational and quality requirements.
• Perform hands-on mechanical repair and installation work onboard vessels, in shipyard areas, and in shop environments as assigned.
• Troubleshoot mechanical issues on shipboard systems, identify root causes, and support effective repair solutions under the guidance of supervisors or leads.
• Follow written work instructions, technical guidance, and supervisor direction to complete assigned tasks safely and efficiently.
• Use standard mechanical tools and equipment properly and safely while maintaining tools and work areas in good condition.
• Work safely in confined spaces, on ladders, and around active production teams within an industrial ship repair environment.
• Communicate clearly with supervisors, leads, and other trades to coordinate work, report progress, and address issues in a timely manner.
• Adhere to shipyard safety expectations, jobsite access requirements, and client-specific procedures at all times.
• Support overall project schedules by completing assigned tasks on time while maintaining quality standards and attention to detail.

Essential Skills

• Hands-on experience performing mechanical repair and installation work in a shipyard, marine repair, industrial maintenance, diesel, automotive, heavy equipment, or similar mechanical environment (experience level should allow work with limited supervision).
• Ability to remove, troubleshoot, inspect, repair, align, install, and test shipboard machinery and mechanical components.
• Comfort working in confined spaces, onboard vessels, on ladders, and in active industrial or shipyard environments.
• Ability to use standard mechanical tools and equipment safely and effectively.
• Capability to follow work instructions, safety procedures, and supervisor direction consistently.
• Strong reliability, safety focus, and teamwork skills in a production environment.
• Basic understanding of shipyard safety expectations and industrial safety practices.
• Effective communication skills to interact with supervisors, leads, and other trades.
• Ability to meet jobsite access and safety requirements as required by the client.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• DBIDS credential in hand is preferred for access to Naval Base San Diego.
• Previous experience in shipyard, marine repair, industrial maintenance, diesel mechanic, automotive mechanic, heavy equipment, or mechanical repair roles is preferred.
• High school diploma, GED, trade school training, apprenticeship, military technical training, or equivalent experience is preferred.
• Experience as a Navy Machinist Mate, Engineman, Coast Guard technician, ship repair mechanic, or industrial mechanic is considered a strong fit.
• Ability to read and work from blueprints and mechanical drawings is beneficial.
• Experience working with pumps, valves, motors, deck machinery, ventilation equipment, steering gear, and other shipboard mechanical systems is highly desirable.
• Comfort working in a fast-paced, safety-focused production setting with changing priorities.

Work Environment

• Work takes place at Naval Base San Diego aboard an active vessel in a shipyard setting, specifically in an industrial, hands-on environment with regular exposure to ships, mechanical equipment, tools, ladders, and confined spaces. The role involves working onboard vessels, in shop areas, and around active production teams, requiring consistent attention to safety, communication, and quality. The culture emphasizes a safety-focused production atmosphere where reliability, teamwork, and adherence to procedures are essential. Posted business hours are Monday through Friday, 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM, although the exact schedule and shift should be confirmed with the client prior to assignment.

This is a Contract position based out of San Diego, CA.

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $28.00/hr.
