Assistant or Associate Clinical Professor in Small Animal Veterinary Medicine Working Title: Assistant or Associate Clinical Professor in Small Animal Veterinary Medicine The Professional Program in Veterinary Medicine (PPVM) at South Dakota State University, in partnership with the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine, seeks an exceptional clinician‑educator who inspires the next generation of veterinarians. The role calls for energy in the classroom, excellence in clinical instruction and a deep commitment to mentorship, translating real‑world veterinary experience into meaningful, hands‑on learning that challenges students to think critically, grow confidently, and pursue clinical excellence. This is a 9‑month, full‑time, clinical (non‑tenure‑track) position at the Assistant or Associate level, located in Brookings, South Dakota. Key Responsibilities This tripartite faculty position involves teaching, scholarly activity, and service, with a primary emphasis on clinical teaching within the professional DVM curriculum. Teaching Responsibilities Deliver clinically focused instruction in small animal didactic and laboratory courses; clinical knowledge in small animal medicine and theriogenology is expected. Facilitate case‑based, integrated, and team‑based learning to strengthen clinical reasoning and decision‑making. Coordinate and align course content with University of Minnesota curricular objectives and learning outcomes. Provide individualized academic advising and professional mentorship to veterinary students within the small‑cohort model. Mentor pre‑veterinary students pursuing admission to the DVM program, supporting academic preparation, career exploration, and professional development. Contribute to curriculum development, assessment, and continuous improvement efforts. Scholarly Activity Veterinary education research and curricular innovation. Collaborative clinical research or case‑based scholarship. Mentorship of veterinary student research and Master of Science projects. Presentation and publication of scholarly work at regional or national levels. Service Contributions Participate in departmental, college, and university committees. Contribute to program development, assessment, and accreditation‑related activities. Engage in professional service at the state, regional, or national level. Support student recruitment, outreach initiatives, and pre‑veterinary engagement activities. Salary and Benefits Salary commensurate with qualifications, starting at $95,000 for Assistant Professor rank. Benefits include medical, dental, flexible benefits, retirement plans, paid holidays, vacation leave; 6% matching retirement plan, 9.34 hours of sick leave each month, eleven paid holidays. Relocation benefits are available per university guidelines. Minimum Qualifications DVM degree (or equivalent) by start date. Expertise in small animal medicine and theriogenology. Experience teaching at the collegiate level. Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills. Valid driver’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire. Ability to work effectively within a collaborative academic team. Preferred Qualifications Experience teaching small animal medicine and/or theriogenology in a veterinary curriculum. Board certification or advanced clinical training in a relevant discipline. Experience with case‑based, integrated, or team‑based teaching models.
