Job Summary Perform all types of work involved with the installation, rearrangement, maintenance, operation, removal and inspection of electrical transmission and distribution facilities. All items apply to overhead and underground, as applicable. Employee may also perform miscellaneous, related, and incidental work in addition to that specifically outlined below. The Line Mechanic A builds upon the skills, abilities and knowledge learned as a Line Mechanic B (or equivalent). Job Description The successful candidate must live (or be willing to relocate at their own expense) within 45 minutes safe driving distance of the Loch Haven Service Center, 1806 Loch Haven Drive, Roanoke, VA 24018. This vacancy is posted in a range and will be filled based on education and experience. Line Mechanic D Responsibilities Assist with assembly, installation, maintenance, removal and competent inspection of underground facilities, conductors, fixtures, structures and other associated equipment on de‑energized and grounded overhead and underground facilities under direct or immediate supervision. Demonstrate ability to perform ground person duties under immediate or direct supervision as skill level dictates. Assist with loading, unloading, handling, maintaining, installing and removing poles, towers and structures. After completion of D‑100, or equivalent experience, demonstrate ability to operate company equipment (excluding digger/derricks and aerial lift vehicles), climb poles, ladders and structures, and work on de‑energized conductors and equipment. May work on conductors and equipment energized up to 260 volts under direct supervision. After completion of D‑200, or equivalent experience, operate digger/derrick and aerial devices under immediate supervision as skill level dictates. Also, under immediate supervision of a higher classification, may work on conductors and equipment energized up to 260 volts. Assemble and install line material and hardware under direct or immediate supervision. Use and store hand lines; tie knots and demonstrate a basic working knowledge with ropes and rigging equipment inspection and use. Splice primary and secondary overhead wires using the proper tools, hardware and equipment (including crimping and compression tools). After completion of D‑200, or equivalent experience, under direct supervision, may operate cutouts, line switches, reclosers and other sectionalizing devices, refuse line and transformer devices. During this time frame, employee may progress from direct supervision to immediate and finally general supervision as skill level dictates. After completion of D‑300, or equivalent experience, test de‑energized overhead lines and equipment; install and remove personal protective grounds under immediate supervision. Inspect and maintain tools, equipment and work area in a safe, clean and orderly fashion. Identify, inspect, use and maintain all classes of rubber gloves and sleeves (PIPE), insulating blankets, hoses and covers (IPE); inspect, maintain, organize, operate and stock company vehicles, equipment and tools. Perform housekeeping duties as assigned. Report irregularities and abnormal conditions. Safely execute pole‑top rescue and bucket truck rescue processes as training is completed. Protect or control the work area. Set and remove barricades, flags, signs, cones and associated equipment. Maintain accurate records and submit accurate reports as required. Correctly read and record information and registered readings on analog or digital kilowatt‑hour meters. Complete Monthly Apprentice Cards and submit to local supervision for review. Perform similar or less‑skilled work as assigned. Line Mechanic D Qualifications High school diploma or GED. No experience required; line work experience or line school education is preferred. Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license and acquire a CDL beginner’s permit within 60 days. Must pass a recommended test from HireVue Line Worker Virtual Job Tryout. Must acquire within a timeframe determined by the company the qualifications necessary to perform the duties of the next higher classification or vacate the current job classification. Must be able to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to perform the duties of the key job (Line Mechanic A) and be qualified through demonstration, examination and/or performance appraisal. A physical abilities assessment is required. Line Mechanic C Responsibilities Assemble, install, maintain, remove and competently inspect overhead and underground facilities including conductors, cables, transformers, fixtures, structures and other associated equipment under immediate or general supervision as skill level dictates. After completion of C‑100, or equivalent experience, competent to perform work on conductors and equipment energized up to 260 volts under general supervision; assist with work on conductors and equipment energized at secondary voltages up to 600 volts under immediate supervision of a higher classification. After completion of C‑100, or equivalent experience, test, de‑energize and ground URD cable, splice and terminate URD cable, and troubleshoot, repair and energize URD cable and equipment under immediate or general supervision as skill level dictates. After completion of C‑200, or equivalent experience, capable of working on conductors and equipment energized up to 600 volts under general supervision. Use volt meters, amp meters, ground meggers, continuity testers and other electrical test equipment up to 600 volts. After completion of C‑200, may cover up stationary tied‑in (cannot transfer) primary conductors and equipment under direct supervision as skill level dictates. After completion of C‑300, may cover up, transfer or move primary conductors and equipment under direct supervision as skill level dictates. After completion of C‑400, may perform the same duties as outlined in the B classification during the first twelve months. Build and erect equipment mountings (such as regulator and transformer platforms) and build overhead transformer installations. Conduct proper tagging procedures while performing switching of energized circuits. Perform inspection and trouble‑shooting of lines. Perform similar or less‑skilled work as assigned. Direct the work of employees assigned to assist. Line Mechanic C Qualifications High school diploma or GED. Minimum of one year distribution electrical power line work experience, or one year of related line experience defined as successful completion of a one‑year electrical power line school certificate plus a minimum of 16 weeks internship or distribution electrical power line experience, or an associate degree from an electrical power line school which includes a minimum of 16 weeks internship or distribution electrical power line experience. Valid Class A CDL is required. Must have performed the duties of and all the qualifications of Line Mechanic D or equivalent and qualify through demonstration, examination and/or performance appraisal. Must acquire within a timeframe determined by the company the qualifications for the next higher classification or vacate the current job classification. A physical abilities assessment is required. Line Mechanic B Responsibilities Assemble, install, maintain, remove and inspect conductors, fixtures and other associated equipment on overhead and underground facilities. During the first twelve months, assist with work on energized lines, cables and equipment; progress from direct supervision to immediate supervision as skill level dictates. Also, capable of replacing fuses and operating switching and sectionalizing devices energized at any voltage when working under general supervision. After twelve months, progress from immediate to general supervision as skill level dictates. Install and operate cutouts, line switches, reclosers and other sectionalizing devices; refuse line and transformer devices; test de‑energized line or equipment, and place or remove grounds. Install and maintain and switch residential and commercial underground distribution facilities; locate and correct trouble using cable‑locating and fault‑finding tools. Install and maintain multiple street‑light circuits. Install three‑phase transformer banks on poles, aerial or ground‑mounted platforms. Install three‑phase regulator banks and energize or remove them from service; install, maintain, operate and remove capacitor banks from service. Connect, check phase rotation, parallel and check voltage on single and three‑phase transformer installations. Locate and correct faults and hazardous conditions on lines and or equipment. Perform similar or less‑skilled work. Prepare, conduct and facilitate safety meetings. Direct the work of employees assigned to assist. Complete Monthly Apprentice Cards and submit to local supervision for review. Line Mechanic B Qualifications High school diploma or GED. Minimum of two years of work experience as Line Mechanic C or equivalent experience as determined by the company. Valid Class A CDL is required. Must have performed the duties of and all the qualifications of Line Mechanic C or equivalent and qualify through demonstration, examination and/or performance appraisal. Must acquire within a timeframe determined by the company the qualifications for the next higher classification or vacate the current job classification. A physical abilities assessment is required. Line Mechanic A Responsibilities Install and maintain transmission and distribution facilities and all types of line equipment on the most congested types of construction, energized or de‑energized. Assemble, install, maintain, remove and inspect conductors, fixtures and other associated equipment on overhead and underground facilities. Operate cutouts, line switches, reclosers and other sectionalizing devices; refuse line and transformer devices; change line and transformer taps; phase out and/or parallel circuits. Select proper standard drawings and interpret specifications and proceed with all new construction work and live‑line work without supervision. Make energized cutovers from old poles and equipment to new or temporary installations. Work with live‑line equipment on energized circuits for emergency repairs or routine modifications of facilities. Install, maintain and switch underground residential distribution and commercial facilities. Locate and correct trouble using cable‑locating and fault‑finding tools and equipment. Direct crew when assigned; obtain, issue, accept and release transmission and distribution clearances or permits in accordance with established switching and tagging procedures. Instruct customers regarding meter or service locations, and advise them regarding service interruptions related to customers’ electrical equipment. Direct the work of employees assigned to assist; assist employees of equal or higher classification; perform similar or less‑skilled work. Line Mechanic A Qualifications High school diploma or GED. Successful completion of apprentice lineman training, including B‑200 certification written test with a score of 80% or higher and successful completion of hands‑on comprehensive demonstrations. External candidates must have a minimum of four years line work experience and successful completion of the journeyman pre‑assessment. Valid Class A CDL is required. Must have performed the duties of and all the qualifications of Line Mechanic B or equivalent and qualify through demonstration, examination and/or performance appraisal. A physical abilities assessment is required. Compensation Grade: U016‑180 Range: $28.31 – $58.62 per hour Physical Demand Level: H – Heavy Work. Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10–20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for medium work.
