The R&D Materials Senior Engineer will apply a systematic and designed experimental approach to develop new polymeric compounds and evaluate changes in material performance prior to commercial scale-up in our manufacturing plants.Specific Job DutiesLeads or supports cross-functional project teams in production-scale compounding and prototype processing trials within the applicable Prysmian manufacturing facility associated with compound development projects.Drives cost reduction and enhanced performance compound development from bench scale to commercialization.Investigates and applies new polymer and additive technologies from a variety of suppliers.Leverages polymers and materials experience to identify and execute projects which improve compound/cable Sustainability and carbon footprint.Works to tight deadlines as well as contributing to longer term R&D projects.Coordinates laboratory experiments through Technical Service Requests.Works independently and provides guidance to R&D Materials laboratory technicians in order to complete project tasks.Creates and modifies compound specifications to support the manufacture of new or existing compounds.Prepares informative and accurate technical reports.Updates and maintains records/database on compound changes or modifications.Key CharacteristicsAbility to work as an individual or within a teamSound technical skills and attention to detailExcellent communication skills at all levels of the organizationMotivated, self-starterEducationQualified candidates will possess a minimum of a B.S. degree in Chemical or Polymer Engineering, Chemistry, or related discipline.Advanced degree preferred.Qualifications:Qualified candidates for the R&D Materials Senior Engineer position should have a minimum of 3-5 years of industrial experience in polymer compounding and demonstrate expertise in the following areas:Hands-on experience developing, formulating, and processing polymer compounds in a manufacturing or industrial R&D environment, including formulation optimization, compounding, and process scale-up.Deep understanding of polymer morphology, rheology, and the structure–property relationships that polymer compound performance and manufacturability.Demonstrated expertise with polymer compounding equipment and processing techniques, including twin-screw extrusion or banbury mixer formulation development, and process optimization.The ideal candidate has a proven track record of developing and commercializing polymer compounds in an industrial environment.Hands-on experience with polymer formulation, compounding, process development, scale-up, and manufacturing support is essential.Industrial experience in polymer compounding is strongly preferred.
