Chief Science Officer
Confidential
The Chief Science Officer (CSO) is the senior scientific leader for the client’s science-focused work and nature museum operations, serving as the institution’s public face of science. Reporting to the President and CEO, the CSO shapes and advances the museum’s mission by guiding the development, accuracy, and delivery of scientific content across exhibitions, programs, and experiences, ensuring science remains central to the institution’s activities. Collaborating across the organization, the CSO ensures science offerings are engaging, relevant, and grounded in inquiry-based, participatory learning. The role involves advising senior leadership and governing boards on emerging scientific trends and opportunities for public engagement, fostering partnerships with scientific, academic, and educational communities, and leading efforts to attract learners and visitors of all ages to the museums. The CSO also supports collaboration on plans for immersive science experiences, such as IMAX and planetarium-related initiatives. Key responsibilities include leading the development and growth of science content, education programs, professional development, and hands-on programming; overseeing living and other museum collections, labs, and educational program and exhibition services; and facilitating teacher-facing and school-related initiatives. The CSO advances educational initiatives and external partnerships across K–12, higher education, and museum communities, represents the institution in national and international scientific forums and media, mentors staff, and supports collaborations with universities and post-secondary institutions. The CSO also oversees exhibition content and educational program development for major openings, manages program timelines and exhibition scheduling, and plays a leading role in growth efforts and reinvestment projects.
