Physical therapy is a skilled service focused on restoring function, strength, and mobility so patients can safely return home. PT procedures include mobility training (bed/chair/toilet transfers and stairs), gait and balance training with assistive devices, individualized strengthening and flexibility programs, pain-management techniques (heat, cold, electrical stimulation, massage), and ADL training in collaboration with OT. The PT process involves an admission assessment, an interdisciplinary care plan with measurable goals, daily therapy (about 4560 minutes, 5 days/week), thorough documentation and ongoing review, and discharge planning from day one. Medicare covers PT only when it is medically necessary, requires skilled expertise, and is supervised by a physician, with emphasis on maintaining or improving functional ability.
