Career Advisor, Career and Professional Development

Position Summary The Career Advisor is responsible for delivering comprehensive career services to undergraduate STEM students and first‑year alumni. Acting as the primary liaison to the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and the Ritchie School of Engineering & Computer Science, the Advisor performs regular outreach to faculty and staff, representing CPD in partnership meetings and delivering career education to classes, student organizations, and campus units. The role advocates inclusion values in career development, employer relationships, and student professional growth, reporting to the Associate Director of CPD. Essential Functions: Career Advising Provide comprehensive career development to individuals and groups of undergraduate students and recent alumni within STEM majors. Serve as a Career Advisor Liaison to the 1GenU program, delivering presentations and events. Conduct 1:1 advising via in‑person, phone, and virtual appointments, including resume/CV/cover letter reviews, internship/job search strategy, informational interviews, networking guidance, interview practice, and salary/offer negotiation assistance. Practice a market‑based career planning approach and understand the degrees and programs offered across assigned areas. Build and maintain effective relationships and communication with student populations. Accurately track student interactions and engagements in PCO, CPD’s career management system. Utilize engagement data in Tableau to develop reports for department leadership and devise strategies to increase student engagement. Essential Functions: Program & Event Development Develop and implement tailored career education/class presentations, career programs, and events such as alumni networking events and panels for the assigned student population. Create virtual and online engagement opportunities, including videos and webinars, to engage students and alumni. Collaborate with Alumni Engagement to connect alumni to students and encourage hiring of DU students. Partner with the Employer Connections team to identify potential employers for programs and events, and promote DU student hiring. Work with Advancement Marketing & Communications to create and disseminate marketing materials, promoting events to campus partners and departmental staff. Track events in PCO and may have the opportunity to teach career courses offered to all undergraduate students. Essential Functions: Career Development Collaboration Maintain effective relationships and communication with college faculty, staff, and administration. Serve as an active and collaborative partner with central and unit‑based Advancement and CPD functions, fostering strategic and effective career practices. Model One DU leadership. Essential Functions: Special Projects Act as a mentor to the Peer Advisors as part of the Peer Advisor Program and graduate student employees serving STEM students within CPD. Serve as a liaison to other campus partners. Essential Functions: University Citizenship Serve as an active and collaborative partner across central and unit‑based advancement functions, fostering strategic and effective work. Model One DU leadership. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong service orientation, excellent interpersonal and advising skills, and sensitivity to diverse populations. Knowledge of career development challenges and opportunities for undergraduate students and first‑year alumni. Cultural competency and ability to communicate effectively across cultures. Knowledge of employment trends impacting students, and of local, national, and international job markets. Ability to speak credibly to students, alumni, faculty, staff, and employers. Proficiency in career planning, market‑based advising, and understanding program degrees. Excellent written and oral communication skills, including strong spelling and grammar. Familiarity with a range of career assessment instruments. Strong partnership skills with faculty, staff, and alumni to develop innovative career programs. Desire to define problems, establish facts, and provide solutions. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education or work experience (Veterans with equivalent combination may substitute for the degree). Two years of professional experience in developing and planning programs, career advising, or coaching. Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree, preferably in higher education, counseling, or an industry‑related field. Experience in higher education or similar complex environments such as the military, government, or non‑profits. Experience developing and planning career‑related programs. Experience working with college students or other job seekers. Experience teaching or assisting with career courses or similar student success courses. Experience assisting clients in effective personal branding techniques such as resumes, cover letters, LinkedIn, and interview preparation. Familiarity with career assessment instruments such as StrengthsFinder, Myers‑Briggs Type Indicator, and Strong Interest Inventory. Working Environment Standard office environment. Unexpected interruptions occur often with moderate to high stress levels. Noise level is quiet to moderate. Physical Activities Ability to work in front of a computer for extended periods. Occasional movement around the office or campus. Work Schedule Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (eligible for partial remote work under the University’s flexible work policy, subject to team needs). Salary The salary for this position is $57,784 per year. Benefits The University of Denver offers benefits, including medical, dental, retirement, paid time off, tuition benefit, and ECO pass.
