Maintenance Technician IV - Street Construction & Maintenance

Summary Supervises and participates in the work of a crew engaged in highly skilled maintenance and construction activities across multiple trades. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Assigns and supervises the work of maintenance workers and technicians. Discusses job requirements with and receives detailed instruction from supervisor. Inspects work in progress to assure conformance with instructions. Requisitions necessary equipment and materials. Maintains time and material records and prepares simple reports. Performs or assists in performing more difficult or skilled tasks. May perform inspection of playgrounds and associated equipment. Performs minor repair of buildings, doors, windows, floors, locks, cabinets, and similar items. Makes repairs and renovations to fields and grounds, including mowing, mulching, aeration, grading, seeding, and sodding. Coordinates with other department operational and technical personnel in assignment of tasks. Diagnoses, adjusts, repairs, and services power-driven equipment, such as diesel or gasoline engine equipment, air compressors, pump apparatus, and aerial truck hydraulic systems. Coordinates with and advises the public on daily or emergency functions. Performs trades work in multiple assigned areas at a master level such as motor equipment repair, welding, carpentry, HVAC, electrical, and plumbing. Operates heavy and light equipment in snow removal. Assists with special events, snow removal, and other emergency tasks, including nights and weekends as needed. Has knowledge of pertinent rules and regulations, guidelines, safety orders, and operational procedures to ensure compliance with applicable law. Enforces sound safety and housekeeping practices. Follows safety rules/procedures and avoids hazards in the work environment. Reviews safety procedures before beginning each job with known hazards. Prioritizes safety, placing avoidance of injury or property damage above all other job requirements. May be required to wear respiratory protection during duties. Supervisory Responsibilities Supervises a work crew in maintenance and construction operations within the assigned department, carrying out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with organizational policies and applicable laws. Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education and Experience High school diploma or GED and 3 to 5 years of experience or training in supervision, mowing, herbicide application, fertilizer application, and other landscape maintenance tasks, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess a current, valid Virginia Class A CDL with air‑brake and tanker endorsement or the ability to obtain one within six months of hire. Must possess current VDOT flagging and intermediate work area protection certifications, or obtain them within six months of hire. Language Skills Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Effective oral and written communication skills. Reasoning Ability Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations May require possession of an appropriate class A, B, or C commercial driver’s license. May require master‑level licensure in a skilled trade area. May require registered technician license, Certified Fertilizer Applicator certification, and qualification as a State Inspector. Physical Demands The job requires regular sitting, hands‑to‑hands use, reaching, walking, climbing, and occasionally stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Must regularly lift or move up to 25 pounds. Vision focus adjustments are required. Work Environment Exposure to outside weather conditions, moving mechanical parts, vibration, wet or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, and loud noise levels.
