Lead HVAC Installer – Oil & Gas

Dog House - Heating, Air, Plumbing is a family-owned and operated HVAC and plumbing company serving Midcoast and Southern Maine and we are looking for an experienced Lead HVAC Installer to join our team.

This is not an entry-level installation position. We are looking for an experienced heating professional who can take ownership of a project from start to finish. You should be comfortable receiving the scope of work, planning the installation, working with an apprentice or helper, completing the installation to a high professional standard, starting and commissioning the equipment, and making sure the customer receives a system we are proud to put our name on.

Just as importantly, we are looking for someone who can help develop apprentices into skilled tradespeople.

Compensation

$40.00–$50.00 per hour, based on experience, licensing and demonstrated ability. This is a full-time, year-round position.

*Planned vacation is generally scheduled outside our peak heating season of September through March. Exceptions and unforeseen circumstances are handled according to company policy and applicable Maine law.

What You'll Do

As our Lead HVAC Installer, you will be responsible for taking residential heating projects from start to finish. Responsibilities include:

• Review the project scope and installation requirements before beginning work
• Plan equipment placement, piping, venting, electrical and controls
• Install oil-fired and gas-fired boilers and furnaces
• Install pumps, circulators, zone valves, controls and associated hydronic components
• Install fuel piping, venting and combustion-air systems
• Complete professional piping and wiring
• Read and follow manufacturer installation instructions and specifications
• Perform equipment startup and commissioning
• Perform combustion testing and make necessary adjustments
• Verify proper system operation before leaving the job
• Identify installation issues and communicate needed changes
• Once install is complete, go over the install with the homeowner and show how to use the equipment
• Maintain an organized and professional jobsite
• Protect the customer's home and property
• Communicate professionally with homeowners
• Complete required job documentation
• Work with and provide direction to apprentices and installation helpers

Lead Installer Expectations

We're looking for more than someone who can make equipment run. A Lead Installer should be able to walk into a project, understand what needs to happen and own the installation. You should take pride in:

Planning. Thinking through the installation before cutting pipe or setting equipment.

Craftsmanship. Clean piping, wiring, venting and equipment layout matter.

Commissioning. Equipment isn't finished because the switch turns it on. Systems need to be properly started, tested and adjusted.

Problem solving. Existing homes don't always cooperate with the plan. We need someone capable of finding good solutions in the field.

Leadership. Apprentices learn by working alongside experienced tradespeople. Part of this position is teaching them not only what to do, but why they're doing it.

Qualifications

We are primarily interested in demonstrated ability rather than simply counting years in the trade. Ideal candidates will have:

• 5+ years of professional HVAC/heating installation experience preferred
• Current Maine oil burner technician license
• Current Maine propane and natural gas technician license with appropriate authorities for the work performed
• Strong knowledge of oil and gas heating equipment
• Experience with hydronic heating systems
• Experience installing boilers and/or furnaces
• Strong piping and mechanical skills
• Ability to understand wiring diagrams and heating controls
• Knowledge of proper venting and combustion requirements
• Experience with combustion testing and equipment commissioning
• Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record
• Ability to work independently
• Ability and willingness to lead and train apprentices

Heat pump, air-conditioning, plumbing and additional trade experience are a plus but are not required for the right heating installer.
