Obstetrical Surgical Technician - Labor and Delivery

Employment Type Part time Shift Rotating Shift Description The Surgical Technologist First Assist, under the direction of a Registered Nurse, will provide patient care in an atmosphere sensitive to each person’s physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs. Under the RN’s direction, sets up and maintains the surgical field and assists the surgeon during operative procedures. Responsibilities The surgical first assistant performs within the scope of service allowed by Mount Carmel Health System, though tasks beyond this scope may be performed under training. Performs observable, technical behaviors as delegated by the surgeon within boundaries set by state and federal regulation and/or licensure. Ability to perform continuously detailed tasks with frequent interruptions and re‑prioritize work constantly. Assist in providing safe positioning of patients under the direct supervision of the RN. Assist in surgical case preparation (equipment, supplies, and instruments). Collaborate with the surgeon to provide exposure of the field during operative procedures, handling tissue and using instruments under the surgeon’s direction. Anticipate and assist in providing hemostasis during operative procedures under the surgeon’s direction. Perform closure of surgical incisions as directed by the surgeon. Select and apply appropriate wound dressing. Provide assistance in securing drainage systems to tissue. Minimum Qualifications Education: High school graduate or equivalent. Preference for graduates of a Certified First Assistant (CFA) program through the Accreditation Review Committee on Education in Surgical Technology (ARC‑ST) or the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Licensure / Certification: One of the following certifications is required: National Commission for the Certification of Surgical Assistants (NCCSA) – Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) American Board of Surgical Assistants (ABSA) – Surgical Assistant, Certified (SA‑C) National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) – Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) Knowledge of applied microbiology, physics, mathematics, human anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology. Ability to use other software as required to perform the essential functions of the job.
