Job Summary:
The External Organizing Coordinator is a leadership role within the External Organizing Department. Working closely with the External Organizing leadership team, the External Organizing Coordinator is responsible for developing organizing campaigns on the cutting edge of progressive activism, building power for healthcare workers and leading the way in healthcare reform. 

This role will require someone who is capable of leading multiple campaigns from start to finish, including development of strategies, staff trainings, building and developing a mid-sized team of Leads and Organizers, at a minimum, and executing a strategic campaign plan including identifying CDPH, Cal/OSHA and other employer violations.

The External Organizing Coordinator reports to the Organizing Director or designee. This job description is subject to change and does not restrict 121RN’s right to assign or reassign duties and responsibilities at any time.

Essential Functions: 

• Ability to run NLRB elections and to develop campaign strategies.
• Mentor, supervise and direct multiple Lead Organizers , External Organizers, Research, Data and Communications staff.
• Ability to build a team and to communicate clearly and persuasively, verbally and in writing.
• Capacity to establish and cultivate relationships with worker and staff from diverse backgrounds
• Plan and execute actions and events to support worker organizing efforts.
• Joint responsibility with department leadership for creating broad and intensive outreach strategies and efforts to non-union workers.
• Possess lengthy experience in identifying, recruiting and developing organizing staff and worker leaders.
• Lengthy experience in conducting individual and group meetings with workers.
• Assist department leadership with managing the department’s annual budget.
• Review workplans and guide Lead Organizers in identifying External Organizer support and development needs, guidance in the field, etc.
• Review mileage and expense reimbursement requests for accuracy prior to approving for reimbursement.
• Review time off requests for External Organizing staff.
• Must spend a minimum of once per month in the field with Leads and/or Organizers to assess strengths, challenges, support and development needed, etc.
• Create weekly reports with status of campaigns for union leadership team.
• Must have excellent follow-up skills.

Other Requirements:

• Knowledge of labor law in areas such as NLRA, FLSA, Title 22, Cal/OSHA, etc.
• Proficiency using Outlook, Word, Excel, and membership databases.
• A commitment to often work long and irregular hours to prepare for and attend events and Union activities on weekends, evenings and some holidays (e.g., Labor Day), or to complete assignments that cannot be completed in a regular workday or during the week.
• Get out the Vote events (All Staff): Participate in occasional neighborhood canvassing events. 
• Civic Actions (All Staff): Support our nurses and licensed professionals during civic events through attendance and participation. This may include, but is not limited to, annual events such as May Day and other Labor-related events including marches, parades, strikes, lawful protests and rallies, or other civic actions and activities. 
• Other duties as assigned.

Job Specifications: Qualifications, Skills, Experience and Attributes: 

• 10+ years of experience leading successful organizing campaigns as a Lead or Coordinator, preferably in the healthcare sector.
• 7+ years of experience in leading developing organizing teams and member leaders, preferably in the healthcare sector.
• Verifiable experience in individually organizing a minimum turf size of 200 new members into the Union.
• Verifiable experience in leading and winning new organizing campaigns of no less than 350 workers, from beginning to end.
• Ability to discern priorities, meet competing deadlines, and juggle a large workload in a fast-paced campaign environment.
• Strong ability to connect and build professional relationships with registered nurses and professionals of varying backgrounds.
• Ability to work independently while also being able to incorporate constructive feedback and direction from department leadership.
• Ability to think critically, independently, learn and understand complex issues quickly.
• Ability to perform with frequent interruptions and/or distractions.
• Ability to adapt to frequent changes in workload. 
• Effective verbal and written communication skills in English required.
• Ability to communicate in Mandarin or Tagalog is a plus (but not required).
• Ability to drive/travel throughout California frequently and for long periods of time (will be required).
• Some out-of-state travel will be required.
• Ability and willingness to work long and irregular hours, including weekends, evenings and holidays. This is a requirement.
• A current, valid driver’s license and working automobile with up-to-date auto insurance are required.

• Regularly operate a computer, cell phone, and other general office equipment.
• Stand, walk, and/or sit for long periods of time.
• Move through the office to access file cabinets and operate office equipment
• Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
• Traverse in the office and in an outside environment during various types of events. This may include moving, or being stationary, for multiple hours, in outside conditions. Traversing may include ascending/descending stairs.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus.
• The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but can elevate during events and campaign activities.
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions.
• May include exposure to large crowds.
