School Nurse

s ummary: Facilitates the school as a healthy and safe environment, assists staff in meeting the medical needs of students and keeps appropriate records. Assess special education students requiring the direct services of a school nurse. Prepares health care plans for involved students and supervises the implementation of required health care procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities : Work is performed under the general supervision of administration. An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following: (Does not include all tasks employee may be expected to perform.)

1. Serves as a member of the professional special education team in meeting the daily health needs of the special education youngsters.
2. Insures that a health-promoting environment is provided through the enforcement of academic health standards, particularly to prevent the transmission of communicable diseases.
3. Helps staff members learn to identify health problems that should be brought to the nurse's attention.
4. Helps staff members learn how to prevent cross-contamination between students.
5. Evaluates and recommends appropriate changes in home and school dietary practices.
6. Refers families to appropriate resources for assistance in obtaining medical or other health services, prosthetic devices or dietary supplements for those who qualify on the basis of financial or medical indigence.
7. Serves on the Individual Educational Planning Committees as appropriate.
8. Determines medical needs of students via communications with parents, home supervisors, family physician and other medical specialists.
9. Coordinates all vision, hearing, dental and other health-related screenings for Special Education students.
10. Stores and dispenses prescribed medication to students as necessary, maintains proper records and arranges with parents for the supply and replenishment required for each student.
11. Provide for emergency medical treatment when necessary and communicates with parents/home supervisors regarding related circumstances.
12. Assist in the learning process by providing students with basic instruction in health related objectives.
13. Examines students referred for suspected physical abuse and informs schools administrator or condition.
14. Conducts in-service for staff in identified areas (first aid, scoliosis, child abuse, etc.).
15. Assists in the development of policy and administrative procedures for sound health practices for students.
16. Serves as the intermediary between the school and the home, private physician, health and social agencies, regarding the health status of students and their needs for consideration in future student health planning.
17. Establishes and maintains required and/or necessary records and files.
18. Observes special education students on a regular basis to detect health needs.
19. Conducts parent conferences and maintains liaison between physicians, parents and staff.
20. Assumes authority, in the absence of a physician, for the care of a student who has suffered an injury or an emergency illness.
21. Administers first aid in accordance with established first aid procedures,
22. Implements board policy on exclusion and re-admission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases.
23. Regular and predictable in-person attendance is required for this position.
24. All other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience: Bachelors of Science in Nursing. Experience in working with handicapped children. Related work experience preferred.


Certificates, License, Registrations: Must be registered in the State of Michigan as a nurse and must be able to qualify for the School Nurse Certification in the State of Michigan.

Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents and community; ability to speak clear and concisely in written or oral communication.

Employment Date, Salary, and Fringe Benefits: Anticipated employment date is August 21, 2026. Placement on the Special Education Salary Schedule will depend on qualifications and experience. New employee starting salary range is $56,258-$112,740. Paid health, dental, vision, life and long-term disability insurances, sick and personal business days. This position is FLSA exempt.
