Job Description and Duties

Working for the Department of Transportation, Division of Equipment (DOE); under the direction of the Supervisor I, the Analyst II will perform the more responsible and complex duties associated with the research, analysis, customer service, review and management of the Department’s Global Positioning System (GPS) Program. The duties of this position require demonstrated experience with database systems, organizational skills, and accounting. Additional duties include, but are not limited to, development and maintenance of policies and procedures, conducting special studies, responding to inquiries, writing reports, and maintaining data integrity. Incumbent will provide backup coverage for analytical staff in the Fleet Branch as needed and vice versa.

This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

Working Conditions

Position located at 3400 R St Sacramento, Sacramento County

This is a Limited Term position which may be extended to 24 months or become permanent

Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Analyst II exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. This position is part of a team that involves teleworking and reporting to the office when needed/required. While in the State facility, employee will primarily work in a climate-controlled office under artificial lighting. May occasionally visit field and equipment shop locations, walk on uneven or slippery surfaces, require occasional bending , stooping and kneeling. May require occasional overnight travel throughout the State. May be required to operate state vehicles.

• Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a state owned or leased vehicle.

1. Describe a complex data analysis you completed involving incomplete, inconsistent, or conflicting information. Explain your analytical approach, the tools you used, how you validated the data, the conclusions you reached, and how your findings supported a decision or operational improvement.

2. Describe a time you were assigned a project with unclear, incomplete, or changing requirements. Explain how you clarified expectations, prioritized the work, communicated with stakeholders, and ensured the final product was accurate and completed on time.

3. Describe a time you believed an established process or directive could be improved. Using the STAR method, explain how you continued to follow the existing requirements, communicated your recommendation through the appropriate channels, and proposed an innovative solution. What was the outcome?
