Company: Blue Marble Environmental
Location: Adair, Iowa
Job Type: Full-Time, Seasonal
Pay: $30.00–$36.00+ per hour, depending on experience
Schedule: Full-time field schedule with overtime opportunities
Travel : Regional jobsite travel, generally within 1.5–2 hours of Adair; overnight travel is rare
The Opportunity
Blue Marble Environmental is seeking an experienced Working Foreman / Crew Leader to lead small field crews across commercial, industrial, municipal, government, and federally funded construction projects throughout western and central Iowa.
This is a hands-on field leadership role for someone who understands how to keep a construction crew productive, organized, safe, and moving with purpose.
You do not need direct erosion-control or stormwater-management experience to be successful in this position. We are willing to train the right construction leader on our specific services and equipment.
What matters most is your ability to lead people, understand construction sequencing, read plans, coordinate labor and equipment, communicate professionally on active jobsites, and take ownership of daily results.
As Blue Marble continues to grow, this position also offers a long-term path toward greater responsibility, including multi-crew supervision, project management, estimating, and field operations leadership.
What You’ll Do
- Lead and work alongside a field crew of approximately 2–5 employees.
- Plan daily labor assignments, equipment needs, materials, and jobsite priorities.
- Review plans, site drawings, and project requirements before and during field operations.
- Coordinate with general contractors, site superintendents, inspectors, DOT representatives, municipal contacts, and other project stakeholders.
- Keep crews productive and focused while maintaining quality and safety standards.
- Adapt daily plans when weather, site conditions, scheduling changes, or other contractors affect the work.
- Operate and oversee equipment used for erosion control, soil preparation, seeding, and site stabilization.
- Help coordinate trucks, trailers, skid loaders, small tractors, hydroseeding equipment, and related field tools.
- Monitor job progress and identify issues before they cause unnecessary downtime.
- Maintain a sense of urgency while ensuring work is completed correctly.
- Train and coach crew members on safe work practices, equipment use, and job expectations.
- Help maintain an organized chain of command so employees understand their responsibilities.
- Represent Blue Marble Environmental professionally on customer and contractor jobsites.
Types of Work You’ll Lead
Blue Marble Environmental specializes in erosion control, stormwater management, and site stabilization services associated with commercial and civil construction projects.
Typical work may include:
- Soil preparation for seeding
- Hydroseeding and conventional seeding
- Site stabilization
- Silt fence installation
- Silt sock and other erosion-control systems
- Construction-site erosion and sediment control
- Small-equipment operation
- Final site restoration following construction activity
- Commercial, municipal, DOT, government, and federally funded projects
The company often works at different jobsites throughout the week, and in many cases crews may work at a different site each day.
Required Qualifications
- 3+ years of hands-on construction experience.
- Previous experience leading, supervising, or directing a field crew.
- Strong understanding of construction jobsite operations and workflow.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, site plans, drawings, or project specifications.
- Ability to plan labor, equipment, and daily work assignments.
- Strong communication and leadership skills.
- Ability to hold employees accountable while maintaining a productive team environment.
- Comfortable working outdoors and alongside the crew.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability and willingness to travel to regional jobsites.
- Dependable, organized, and able to make decisions in the field.
Preferred Qualifications
- 3–5+ years of foreman, crew-lead, or field-supervision experience.
- Experience in civil construction, sitework, earthwork, excavation, roadwork, utilities, commercial landscaping, site restoration, or related construction environments.
- Experience operating skid loaders, tractors, trucks, trailers, or similar equipment.
- Class A CDL.
Candidates without a CDL may still be considered if they are willing and able to obtain one.
Direct erosion-control or stormwater-management experience is helpful but not required.
Ideal Candidate Backgrounds
We are open to strong field leaders from several construction backgrounds, including:
- Civil/sitework foremen
- Earthwork or excavation crew leaders
- Road or utility crew leaders
- Commercial landscape construction foremen
- Site restoration or grading supervisors
- Agricultural/construction equipment operators with leadership experience
- Experienced equipment operators ready to step into greater crew responsibility
If you understand construction, know how to lead people, and are willing to learn our specific trade, we want to hear from you.
Compensation & Benefits
- $30.00–$36.00+ per hour, depending on experience and qualifications
- Weekly pay
- Overtime opportunities
- Prevailing-wage project opportunities
- Performance and project-based bonus opportunities
- Medical insurance
- 401(k) with employer match
- Paid time off
- Paid holidays
- Vacation and sick leave
- Company-provided safety equipment and uniforms
- Company events, employee perks, and recognition opportunities
- Advancement opportunities as the company grows
Schedule & Seasonality
Blue Marble Environmental operates in a seasonal construction environment.
- Employees typically work heavily during the active construction season and may earn significant overtime.
- Depending on winter weather and project schedules, employees may experience approximately 8–10 weeks of seasonal layoff during the winter months.
- Exact timing varies from year to year.
- Historically, field employees may accumulate approximately 2,000 or more working hours during the active 9–10 month season.
For the right long-term leader, continued company growth may create opportunities to take on additional project-management, estimating, planning, and operational responsibilities.
Travel Expectations
- Most work is performed throughout western and central Iowa.
- Jobsites may be located approximately 1.5–2 hours from Adair.
- Daily travel to changing jobsites is a normal part of the position.
- Overnight stays are uncommon and have historically been rare.
- Employees typically return home at the end of the workday.
Career Growth
Blue Marble Environmental is actively growing its field operations.
The long-term goal is to expand from the current crew structure into four to five productive field crews. A successful foreman may have the opportunity to grow into a broader leadership position responsible for:
- Overseeing multiple crews
- Field coordination and scheduling
- Project planning
- Equipment and logistics oversight
- Estimating support
- Project management
- Training and developing future crew leaders
This is an opportunity to join a growing company where strong performance can directly lead to increased responsibility and advancement.
