Position Description:  The Quality Inspector – First Piece is responsible for verifying that machine setups have produced a conforming part before the operator is released to run the balance of the job. The primary duty is to complete any first pieces that are ready, in order of production priority. Between first pieces, this position performs other inspections — work in process (WIP) or final inspection of job lots — using manual methods or existing CMM programs on the facility's automated CMM equipment, as needed based on team workload. All work verifies conformance to customer Drawings/Specifications/Standards while adhering to the Quality Policy and AS9100 requirements. Position reports to the Quality Manager and takes daily direction from lead inspectors (as applicable).

Essential Responsibilities:

• Complete any first pieces that are ready, in order of production priority, verifying whether the machine setup has produced a conforming part before the operator is released to run the balance of the job.
• Report first piece results in a manner which fully describes the disposition of the setup piece, and communicate results directly to the machinist, setup personnel, and the responsible supervisor.
• Re-inspect following setup corrections until the setup is confirmed acceptable; escalate to lead inspectors, manufacturing Supervisor or Quality Manager when a setup cannot be brought into conformance or when direction is disputed / unclear.
• Perform other inspections — WIP or final inspection of job lots — using manual methods or existing CMM programs, as needed based on team workload.
• Set up and run existing CMM inspection programs on the facility's automated CMM equipment, including part staging and fixturing, alignment, probe selection, and probe calibration.
• Could include minor edits to existing CMM programs (alignments, probe paths, feature call-outs) under the direction of the CMM Programmer or Inspection Supervisor; escalate new or complex programming requirements to the CMM Programmer.
• Perform dimensional inspection such as length / height / distance between reference points using precision instruments such as micrometers, calipers, verniers, dial indicators, profilometers, comparators, height gages, pin gages, plug / thread gages, and / or radius gages to ensure the product meets the customer's requirements.
• Interpret Engineering Drawings/Specifications/Standards and obtain part design information, to include a good understanding and knowledge of GD&T, ANSI-Y14.5, PWA 360 & PWA 79360.
• Assess inspection / test results of parts for compliance with drawings and specifications - ensuring that only conforming product moves forward in the manufacturing process.
• Identify dimensional and visual defects; accept or reject product, identifying nonconformance and potential resolution, and initiate nonconformance documentation as required.
• Detailed completion of all paperwork, as required, including inspection reports and the associated transactions and records in the ERP system, in accordance with document control requirements.
• Participate in gage repeatability and reproducibility (gage R&R) and other measurement systems analysis studies as assigned.
• Maintain assigned gages and inspection equipment in a calibrated, ready-to-use condition; report equipment that is damaged or out of calibration.
• Work closely with production to identify recurring setup issues and recommend changes to achieve optimal results.
• Ability to collaborate, cooperate, and work within a team environment - as well as work independently.
• Ability to handle multiple priorities while maintaining proper attention to detail.
• Works with appropriate functional Engineering and Manufacturing areas to disposition and / or resolve discrepancies.
• Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications:

• 1-3+ years Aerospace/Manufacturing Quality inspection experience or formal training, at minimum.
• Demonstrated experience performing first piece / setup verification inspection in a machining environment.
• 1-3+ year's of working knowledge and experience with GD&T, ANSI Y14.5, PWA 360/79360 or similar drawing interpretation.
• Proficient at reading blueprints, with knowledge of dimensional symbols and measuring equipment.
• Ability to identify dimensional and visual defects.
• Good written and verbal communication skills - must be able to give clear, direct, and timely feedback to machine operators and setup personnel.
• Accuracy and attention to detail; ability to handle multiple priorities on an active production floor.
• Documentation and reporting skills, including adherence to document control requirements and knowledge of various inspection reports.
• Problem solving and analytical skills; ability to work without direct supervision.
• 1+ year experience operating a CMM, including part setup, running existing programs, and probe calibration.
• PC-DMIS experience a plus; experience with Hexagon CMM preferred to make minor edits to existing programs
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and Adobe, other Windows software etc.
• Experience participating in gage R&R / measurement systems analysis (MSA) studies a plus.
• Familiarity with ISO9001/AS9100 a plus.
• Knowledge of Discus and Net-Inspect a plus.
• Due to ITAR regulations, this position requires that the employee must be a U.S Citizen or a U.S Permanent Resident.
