Catholic Charities St. Joseph’s Family Center is one of three emergency family housing facilities offering shelter to San Francisco families prior to transition into long-term or supportive housing.

Salary: $ 26.00-$26.78 per hour.

Location: Onsite on Call.

Through Catholic Charities St. Joseph’s Family Center program, families receive three to six months emergency shelter, three meals daily, on-site case management, counseling and crisis intervention. With assistance from staff, families are assessed and referred to relevant agencies. In addition, St. Joseph’s offers money management and job search support, parenting workshops and activity programs geared to assist families in maintaining healthy relationships.

 

The Residential Assistant monitors the comings and goings of residents and staff, directs telephone calls & visitors to the appropriate persons, ensures the safety of residents, and assists residents on an ongoing basis. The on-call position functions as needed to cover for regularly scheduled RAs.

• Ensure the resident safety by controlling facility access and permitting entry only to authorized residents, staff, visitors, and service providers.
• Enforce house rules and program policies while maintaining clear expectations, boundaries, and accountability.
• Teach and assist residents in developing independent living skills. including housekeeping, personal hygiene, cooperation, and personal responsibility.
• Facilitate conflict resolution with residents and complete incident reports, grievance documentation, and related records as required.
• Respond promptly to emergencies by assessing situations and notifying appropriate staff, law enforcement, fire, or medical personnel as needed.
• Complete accurate and timely documentation and recordkeeping, observation reports, shift logs, incident reports, resident warnings, and other required records.
• Collaborate with case managers and other program staff to ensure effective communication, service coordination, and consistency in resident support.
• Assist with shelter readiness for incoming families, including maintaining kitchen, dining, and food storage areas and preparing meals and snacks.
• Participate in assigned program events, training sessions, staff meetings, and supervisory meetings.
• Complete assigned shift responsibilities, including hourly rounds, mail distribution, and resident room inspections.
• Provide front desk and telephone reception services while maintaining resident confidentiality and privacy.
• Document and report unusual events or incidents to appropriate leadership, including the Lead Residential Assistant, Clinical Services Coordinator, and/or Program Director.
• Coordinate or arrange resident transportation as assigned.
• Perform administrative and clerical duties as assigned.
• Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

 

Graveyard Shift

• Perform deep cleaning of the facility, including common areas, restrooms, and shared spaces.
• Wash, fold, and organize program laundry and linens as needed.
• Provide additional support with program operations and kitchen cleaning activities as needed.

 

Swing Shift

• Monitor and supervise resident activities in the library and computer lab.
• Facilitate resident house meetings and promote participation.
• Supervise meal and snack service and maintain cleanliness of the dining room and kitchen following service.

Education & Experience

• Minimum of two (2) years of experience working with individuals experiencing homelessness.
• Basic knowledge of substance use disorders and mental health conditions.
• Ability to assess emergency situations and respond appropriately by accessing necessary medical, behavioral health, and social service resources.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to prioritize tasks and demonstrate strong organizational skills.
• Ability to develop systems and processes to track data and monitor outcomes.
• Knowledge of sanitation standards and Universal Precautions, including HIV/AIDS protocols.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Proficient in Microsoft applications; familiarity with networking concepts is a plus.
• Ability to communicate in Spanish or Cantonese is preferred.
• Knowledge of mandated reporting requirements related to working with children.
• Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
• Demonstrates a results-oriented approach to work.
• Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
• Commitment to providing client-centered services.
• Demonstrates organizational awareness and an understanding of agency operations and goals.

• Ability to work in a primarily office-based environment, including sitting for extended periods and frequent use of a computer, keyboard, and other office equipment.

• Requires sufficient visual acuity to accurately review, complete, and maintain documentation, monitor resident and facility activities, and perform assigned duties safely and effectively.

• Family shelter serving individuals and families experiencing homelessness.
• Work is performed within a residential shelter environment and may include regular interaction with residents and their guests.
• Environment may include frequent activity, multiple children, and moderate to high noise levels.
• Work is performed in an older facility that has been adapted to support program operations and employee workspaces.
• Occasional interaction with residents experiencing heightened stress, frustration, or emotional distress, requiring the ability to remain calm, exercise sound judgment, and utilize de-escalation techniques when appropriate.
