Associate Director - Commercialization

Associate Director - Commercialization Center for Research Innovation (CRI) at Northeastern University is seeking a self‑motivated individual with experience in technology transfer and a proven track record in technology licensing/commercialization to join its team as an Associate Director – Commercialization. The position reports to the Director of Commercialization and coordinates closely with CRI team members to maximize the impact and value derived from the university’s technology portfolio. About the Opportunity This role focuses on life sciences research and inventions. The Associate Director will manage a portfolio of faculty, researchers, and research centers, fostering relationships with university researchers within a global network and advancing the development and commercialization of groundbreaking technologies. Responsibilities include supporting spin‑outs and start‑ups, building strategic relationships with industry partners, and effectively communicating Northeastern’s capabilities to both the research community and industry. Key duties involve managing an intellectual property portfolio, evaluating commercialization potential of new technologies, developing and implementing marketing and licensing strategies, negotiating licenses and amendments, and supporting post‑license activity. A highly motivated, professional individual with a strategic and execution‑oriented mindset will thrive in this role. The University is unable to work sponsor for this role, now or in the future. Minimum Qualifications Graduate Degree in a technical life sciences field and at least 8+ years of experience in academic technology transfer (or equivalent business development/research alliance experience) with a life sciences research lab or company; MBA preferred. Proven record of accomplishment in supporting the commercialization of early‑stage technologies, including assessment, marketing, licensing, and deal structuring. Demonstrated expertise in negotiating, drafting, and executing high‑value deals. Network of industry relationships in life sciences and/or involvement with industry associations and the entrepreneurial ecosystem. Capacity for strategic and tactical thinking with a high drive for execution. Ability to communicate complex scientific concepts clearly and concisely to audiences with and without technical expertise. Effective collaboration and teamwork with diverse internal and external stakeholders. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Experience with MS Office/Teams, Salesforce, and online database tools. Exceptional capability to manage multiple projects at various stages simultaneously. Only U.S. persons (citizen, permanent resident, or protected individual per 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)) will be considered for this position. Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities Technology Evaluation and Management (30%) – Manage technology portfolio to optimize commercialization outcomes, identify IP, evaluate patentability, foster spin‑out opportunities, and provide recommendations for portfolio improvement. Strategic Outreach and Engagement (30%) – Develop industry relationships to create impact from Northeastern’s patent portfolio, nurture partnerships, and capture industry challenges to guide research. Deal Negotiation (30%) – Act as CRI/Northeastern ambassador during deal negotiation, structure and negotiate license terms with industry partners and spin‑outs, and coordinate with legal and finance units. Strategic Program Development (10%) – Develop, execute, and manage commercialization strategies, influence marketing initiatives, create programs to scale external relationships, and contribute to continuous improvement of CRI processes and systems.
