Vision Rehabilitation Specialist

Agency Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Division Blind Services Position Title Vision Rehabilitation Specialist (NS) – NC09 Position Details Job Number: 60043165 Responsibilities Teach guide techniques, indoor techniques, cane techniques, core orientation concepts (route travel, block travel, street crossing, transportation). Plan transportation options (taxi, city bus, paratransit, train, rideshare, etc.) and travel techniques for low vision. Provide technology instruction, including navigation apps for independent travel. Align instruction with the consumer’s Individualized Plan for Employment (IPE). Develop lesson plans, conduct assessments, and document progress in the case management system. Create and administer effective assessments and write timely reports. Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings, staff in‑service trainings, and community outreach. Assist with service‑animal use, meal assistance, and coverage of staff absences. Co‑teach with other faculty to provide a comprehensive learning experience for remote and in‑person learners. Stay current on trends, products, and mobility applications for visually impaired individuals. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in visual impairment, rehabilitation counseling, or related field. Certification by ACVREP as Certified Low Vision Therapist, Certified Vision Rehabilitation Therapist, Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist, or Certified Assistive Technology Instructional Specialist (required within two years of employment if not already certified). At least one year of experience working with individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Experience teaching orientation and mobility to adults or teens, including individuals with secondary disabilities. Ability to differentiate instructional strategies for diverse learners and varying readiness levels. Preferred Skills Experience in speech‑enabled technologies and adaptive teaching methods. Experience working with students using service animals. Compensation and Benefits Salary Range: $41,206 – $72,113 (NC09).
