Gardner Skelton PLLC
Experienced Legal Assistant | Charlotte-Based Boutique Firm
Charlotte, NC (NoDa) | Full-Time | In-Person
About Gardner Skelton
At Gardner Skelton, we’re not your typical law firm—and we’re proud of that. Based in Charlotte’s vibrant NoDa neighborhood, we’re a Chambers-ranked boutique firm that blends excellent legal counsel with genuine approachability. From Fortune 500 companies to local startups, healthcare innovators to impactful nonprofits, our clients trust us because we’re smart, thoughtful, and relentlessly practical.
We handle employment law, business litigation, healthcare law, construction law, corporate guidance, tax law, appellate law, and mediation. More than lawyers and legal staff, we’re partners who care deeply about our clients, our community, and each other. The way we work—and the way we treat people—is grounded in our five Core Values: Practice Excellence, Relationships Before Transactions, Creatively Practical, Own It, and Rise Together .
Our office buzzes with collaboration (and occasional barking—because yes, we’re proudly dog-friendly), and we’ve worked hard to build an environment unlike just about any law firm you’ve seen.

About the Role
We’re looking for an experienced Legal Assistant who enjoys keeping busy attorneys organized, prepared, and running smoothly. The right person brings the familiarity with law firm work that comes from legal assistant experience, the organizational skills of an excellent administrative or executive assistant, and a knack for spotting what needs attention before anyone has to ask.
The heart of this role is administrative support: managing calendars, coordinating meetings and logistics, tracking deadlines, organizing files, preparing polished materials, and keeping communication and follow-up on track. You’ll also help with the day-to-day administrative steps that move client matters forward, from opening files to preparing documents for attorney review and filing.
You’ll be someone attorneys and colleagues can count on to handle details carefully, communicate professionally, use good judgment, and keep things moving when priorities shift.
What You’ll Do
- Provide reliable administrative support to attorneys, including scheduling, calendar management, meeting coordination, travel and other logistics, and follow-up tracking.
- Serve as a friendly, professional point of contact for clients, colleagues, vendors, and other outside parties, and route questions and requests to the right person.
- Maintain accurate calendar entries, appointments, reminders, and deadline information so attorneys are prepared and nothing gets lost in the shuffle.
- Draft routine administrative correspondence and format, proofread, assemble, and distribute correspondence and documents prepared by attorneys.
- Help open and maintain client matters, including running conflict checks, preparing engagement agreements from approved templates, and keeping files and contact information organized.
- Assist with the administrative side of court filings, including assembling exhibits and supporting materials, checking formatting, and submitting attorney-approved documents through e-filing portals.
- Create polished PowerPoint presentations, reports, and other materials for internal and external use.
- Look for practical ways to improve administrative processes and make the team’s day-to-day work easier.
What You Bring
- At least two full years of experience as a Legal Assistant in a fast-paced law firm environment.
- Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple calendars, deadlines, requests, and personalities without losing track of the details.
- A proactive, service-minded approach: you anticipate needs, take ownership of follow-up, and don’t need constant direction to keep work moving.
- Strong communication skills and the confidence to interact professionally with attorneys, clients, colleagues, executives, and outside parties.
- Excellent writing, proofreading, formatting, and document production skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Outlook, Teams, and PowerPoint, along with experience using document management or case management systems. Experience with NetDocuments and Centerbase is a plus.
- Familiarity with law firm administrative processes such as conflict checks, engagement agreements, e-filing portals, and court document formatting.
- Sound judgment and discretion with confidential information, plus a calm, practical approach when things gets busy.
Why You’ll Love Working at Gardner Skelton
- Culture & Community: We’ve cultivated a genuinely supportive environment where everyone’s ideas matter. You’ll work alongside colleagues who enjoy their work—and each other.
- Award-Winning Workspace in NoDa: Our office was recognized nationally by the American Society of Interior Designers for its workplace design and emphasis on employee wellness. Take a look.
- Dog-Friendly Office: Bring your furry best friend to work—we believe pets make the workday better.
- Competitive Compensation & Benefits: We offer salaries commensurate with experience and a competitive benefits package.
- Professional Growth & Development: We encourage continuous learning and give you opportunities to sharpen your skills.
- Impact & Recognition: Your contributions won’t go unnoticed. We celebrate successes and support each other through challenges.
- Foodie-Friendly: Unlimited snacks, regular firm-catered meals, a fancy coffee machine, and a location near dozens of great restaurants are a few of the perks.
- No Billable Hours Requirement: Focus on supporting attorneys and clients without the pressure of meeting a billable quota.
- Time Off & Early Fridays: Enjoy generous PTO, separate paid sick leave, and a 3 p.m. close on Fridays. We want you to have time to recharge and take care of life outside the office.
Ready to join a team that’s redefining what it means to practice law? We can’t wait to hear from you!
