Materials Engineer II - Electrochemist
At Medtronic Neuroscience, we are redefining what's possible in neurological and spinal care, bringing together innovation, expertise, and partnership to improve lives around the world.
Medtronic Neuromodulation advances innovative therapies that restore function and relieve chronic pain. We help patients reclaim their lives and achieve better outcomes.
This role is part of the Neuromodulation Research & Development organization, supporting the development and evaluation of advanced electrode technologies and materials used in implantable therapies. The team focuses on understanding electrochemical interactions at the device-tissue interface, evaluating material performance and degradation mechanisms, and advancing technologies that contribute to long-term device reliability and therapeutic effectiveness.
This position is based onsite at Medtronic's Rice Creek campus in Minnesota. The role requires regular laboratory presence to perform electrochemical testing, materials characterization, and bench evaluations. Minimal travel is expected.
The Materials Engineer II - Electrochemist will support the development and evaluation of materials, electrodes, and surface technologies used in active implantable medical devices. This role combines electrochemical testing, materials analysis, and product development activities to assess material performance, investigate degradation mechanisms, and contribute to innovation in neuromodulation therapies. The position works closely with cross-functional engineering and research teams to generate data that informs technology development and product design decisions.
Primary Responsibilities
- Perform electrochemical testing and characterization of metals, alloys, and electrode materials using techniques such as open circuit potential, cyclic polarization, cyclic voltammetry (CV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS).
- Conduct bench electrical stimulation testing to evaluate the performance, stability, and durability of stimulation leads and electrodes for implantable medical devices.
- Analyze corrosion behavior, degradation mechanisms, and material performance to support product development and technology assessments.
- Support the evaluation of emerging electrode technologies, materials, and surface modification approaches for neuromodulation applications.
- Investigate electrochemical interactions at the device-tissue interface, including charge transfer and long-term material stability.
- Develop and execute laboratory test protocols, document findings, and communicate results to cross-functional stakeholders.
- Contribute to material selection, design recommendations, and engineering specifications based on testing and analytical results.
- Support failure analysis, life prediction activities, and material-related investigations to improve product performance and reliability.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Materials Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related technical discipline with 2+ years of relevant experience, OR a Master's degree in one of these fields.
- Hands-on experience performing electrochemical testing in an academic, research, or industry setting.
- Experience analyzing and interpreting experimental data to support engineering or scientific conclusions.
- Experience working in a laboratory environment and following documented test procedures.
- Ability to communicate technical findings through written reports and presentations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Hands-on experience with both DC and AC electrochemical characterization techniques.
- Academic research, thesis work, or senior design project focused on corrosion, electrochemistry, electrode materials, or related topics.
- Coursework or research experience in biomedical engineering, biomaterials, or implantable medical devices.
- Experience with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and corrosion testing methodologies.
- Experience supporting materials characterization, failure analysis, or product development activities within a regulated industry.
