Job Title: Apprentice Machinist – CNC Routers and Foam Cutting

Job Description

The Apprentice Machinist supports the programming, setup, and operation of CNC routers and foam cutting equipment while learning to produce custom molds for cement-based and gypsum-based architectural products. Working under the mentorship of CNC programmers and operators, this role focuses on developing foundational skills in CNC machining, CAD file preparation, and mold fabrication in a hands-on manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities

• Support the programming, setup, and operation of CNC routers and foam cutting equipment under the guidance of CNC programmers and operators.
• Assist in the setup and operation of CNC routers from start to finish, ensuring accurate and efficient production of custom molds.
• Learn to read and interpret shop drawings, including reference planes and machine parameters, to support CNC machining and mold fabrication.
• Learn to create and prepare working drawings and digital files used for mold fabrication and CNC cutting.
• Develop proficiency in Enroute and Mastercam software for CNC cutting, toolpath creation, and file preparation.
• Support the CAD and molding fabrication departments with general tasks related to mold production and machining.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in compliance with internal safety standards and OSHA requirements.
• Assist with routine preventive maintenance on CNC machines and related equipment to ensure reliable operation.
• Monitor stock material levels and assist in verifying received materials against documentation.
• Learn and follow all safety standards and OSHA requirements applicable to the manufacturing environment.
• Train to safely operate a counterbalance-type forklift and use it to move materials and components as needed.
• Inspect the accuracy of completed molds and assist in making final fabrication adjustments to meet quality standards.

Essential Skills

• Basic ability to read and interpret shop drawings or a strong desire to learn this skill.
• Interest in learning CNC machine operations, including understanding reference planes and machine parameters.
• Willingness to learn CNC setup and operation, particularly on CNC routers.
• Motivation to develop skills in creating and preparing working drawings and files for mold fabrication.
• Ability to follow instructions and work under the mentorship of CNC programmers and operators.
• Commitment to maintaining a clean, organized, and safe work area.
• Ability to learn and adhere to safety standards and OSHA requirements.
• Willingness to train in safe operation of a counterbalance-type forklift.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Interest in developing proficiency with Enroute software for CNC cutting and file preparation.
• Interest in developing proficiency with Mastercam software for CNC programming and toolpath creation.
• Ability to support CAD and molding fabrication departments with general tasks.
• Attention to detail when inspecting the accuracy of completed molds and assisting with final adjustments.
• Comfort working in a manufacturing environment with varying temperatures, loud noises, and dusty conditions.
• Reliability in monitoring stock materials and verifying received materials.

Work Environment

This role operates primarily in a manufacturing setting with exposure to varying temperatures, loud noises, and dusty conditions. You will work around CNC routers, foam cutting equipment, and related machinery throughout the day. Required personal protective equipment includes safety glasses and steel-toe or composite safety boots. The environment emphasizes safety, organization, and adherence to OSHA standards while supporting collaborative work with CAD, molding fabrication, and CNC teams.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Lincoln, CA.

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $25.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
