Director, People Operations
Work Location:Remote - USA Schedule:
Full time To advance the purpose of InterVarsity, this position will serve as the Chief People Officer's primary executive support and operational partner, ensuring the People line runs with clarity, efficiency, and momentum. This role combines the instincts of a high-functioning executive assistant with the mindset of a systems thinker -- someone who manages the CPO's operational cadence with excellence, anticipates needs before they are voiced, and proactively identifies and solves the operational and process friction that slows organizational progress.
The Director, People Operations will own the CPO's calendar, travel, communications, and follow-through; manage complex, highly sensitive cross-functional projects; and serve as a creative, technology-savvy systems designer who builds and improves the operating infrastructure of the People line. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
Personal:
- Be a maturing disciple of Jesus Christ: growing in love for God, God's Word, God's people of every ethnicity and culture, and God's purposes in the world
- Own the CPO's operational cadence, including calendar management, meeting preparation, agenda development, follow-up tracking, and travel coordination -- functioning with the responsiveness, discretion, and proactive care of a high-functioning executive assistant
- Anticipate the CPO's needs; surface emerging issues, scheduling gaps, and logistical risks proactively
- Manage communications on behalf of the CPO, including scheduling outreach, follow-up correspondence, and coordination with internal stakeholders across the People line and broader organization
- Support logistics for CPO-led events, team gatherings, staff transitions, and executive engagements
- Develop and maintain real-time visibility tools such as dashboards, project trackers, and status communications that not only keeps the CPO and the leadership team informed, but also helps the team make strategic decisions
- Handle highly sensitive and confidential information with absolute discretion, including personnel matters, organizational decisions, and executive communications; maintain appropriate information boundaries across all stakeholder interactions
- Proactively scan for operational friction, process inefficiencies, and gaps in how the People line functions; bring forward observations with proposed solutions
- Design, select, and implement tools and systems that improve how teams work, including project management platforms, operating rhythms, meeting structures, and communication workflows, and manage adoption across stakeholders
- Build and steward the CPO's operating infrastructure: workstream tracking, decision logs, milestone management, and cross-functional coordination systems
- Manage complex projects on behalf of the People organization, including vendor coordination, stakeholder engagement, and timeline stewardship
- Develop reports and presentations synthesizing data and findings for the CPO and executive leadership, always seeking alignment on the lens and purpose before beginning
- Build genuine working relationships across the People line and with key internal partners as a foundation for systems and process work; engage stakeholders to understand their needs, surface friction they are experiencing, and develop solutions that work for the people using them
- Serve as a thought partner to the CPO, helping translate vision into actionable plans and workstreams; bring curiosity about the CPO's strategic direction and look for ways to advance it operationally
- Prepare the CPO for key engagements, such as executive conversations, ELT interactions, Board-related work, and leadership events through briefings, pre-work, and materials preparation
- Draft key communications on behalf of the CPO, including updates to the ELT, staff-wide messages, and team announcements
- Own and drive priority special projects assigned by the CPO, applying discretion, organizational savvy, and strong stakeholder management
- Build and maintain strong working relationships across People Operations and with key internal partners, modeling relational warmth and high customer service in every interaction
Required Qualifications:
- Annually affirm InterVarsity's Statement of Faith
- Alignment with InterVarsity's mission and a commitment to growing as a maturing disciple of Jesus Christ
- 7+ years of progressive experience in operational support, executive assistance, or chief of staff functions, with demonstrated responsibility for supporting a senior executive or C-suite leader
- Proven ability to manage highly confidential and sensitive information with discretion, sound judgment, and consistent professional boundaries
- Demonstrated experience building or improving operational systems, tools, or processes at a team or organizational level
- Experience planning leadership and team events that embody hospitality and foster engagement, productivity, vision alignment and culture
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to draft executive-level correspondence, briefings, and stakeholder communications
- High relational and emotional intelligence; strong customer service orientation with the ability to build trust quickly across diverse stakeholders and work effectively in a relationship-driven organizational culture
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, including Outlook calendar management, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Bachelor's degree in business, communications, organizational development, or a related field
- Experience working in a faith-based, nonprofit, or mission-driven organization, with an understanding of the relational and cultural dynamics unique to those environments
- Familiarity with project management tools such as Monday.com, Asana, Smartsheet, or similar platforms; experience leading tool adoption or training others preferred
- Familiarity with Workday or comparable HRIS platforms
- Experience supporting organizational change initiatives, including stakeholder communication and change readiness
