The unit averages more than 300 births per month, approximately 20 births in a 24-hour period, and 30–40 admits with 40 visits per day across 20 rooms. Double labor assignments are a daily occurrence on this unit. The unit is very fast paced, busier and higher acuity than might be normally expected, and 48-hour contracts may not be realistic due to how busy the unit is.The Birthing Care Unit cares for obstetrical patients 16 weeks and greater for all intrapartum and for high-risk antepartum and postpartum care, as well as under-16-weeks high-risk patients on the high-risk maternity unit. The unit includes an obstetrical triage unit to allow for screening of patients prior to admission and to perform routine outpatient procedures such as antenatal fetal surveillance, intravenous hydration, and medication administration.
