Plumber IV (Lead)

University Facility Services is seeking a skilled and experienced Lead Plumber to oversee and participate in the repair, maintenance, inspection, and installation of plumbing systems across campus. The position performs journeyman-level plumbing work involving installation, maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting, and repair of complex commercial and institutional plumbing systems. This position requires expert knowledge of plumbing codes, mechanical room systems, specialty valves, and related equipment, with the ability to diagnose issues ranging from routine service calls to large-scale system failures. The role operates independently, provides technical guidance to others as needed, and ensures all work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable codes and standards. This position will lead the plumbing shop that includes plumbing maintenance, new work, existing work and repairs. Lead will oversee day to day operations, manpower layout, project allocation, tools and equipment (procurement, maintenance, and tracking). This position requires extensive knowledge of mechanical rooms/plumbing systems. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. Duties & Responsibilities Performs journeyman-level installation, inspection, testing, maintenance, and repair of commercial and institutional plumbing systems, including domestic water, sanitary sewer, storm drainage, gas piping, fixtures, and mechanical room equipment (steam and chilled water). Diagnoses and resolves complex plumbing issues affecting buildings and infrastructure. Independently troubleshoots system failures, leaks, pressure issues, and equipment malfunctions. Responds to emergency service calls, assesses risk, implements corrective actions, and restores systems to operational condition with minimal disruption. Ensures all work complies with local, state, and national plumbing codes, safety standards, and university policies. Completes work orders, inspections, documentation, and material take-offs accurately and in a timely manner. Reviews drawings, specifications, and schematics to execute work correctly. Provides technical guidance and informal leadership to apprentices and lower-level plumbers. Serves as a role model for safety, workmanship, professionalism, and customer service. Assists in planning work activities and sequencing tasks for efficient execution. Communicates professionally with building occupants, supervisors, contractors, and other trades to coordinate work activities. Maintains a clean appearance and positive public relations while representing Facilities Services. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of commercial and institutional plumbing systems, materials, and mechanical room equipment. Knowledge of applicable plumbing codes and safety standards, with the ability to interpret and apply blueprints, drawings, and technical documentation. Skill in the use of hand and power tools, testing equipment, and diagnostic devices. Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple assignments, communicate effectively with coworkers, supervisors, and customers, and maintain a safe work environment. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalency is required. Apprenticeship program technical training experience also required. Seven years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience. Ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy. Journeyman Plumber license or certification, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
