Job Description
This role is an excellent opportunity for a hands-on maintenance mechanic to grow their skills in a busy steel distribution center that ships and cuts metal coils for customers. You will work as an apprentice under a head maintenance technician, learning how to perform a wide range of maintenance tasks across the facility. While preventive maintenance will be your primary focus, you will also support hydraulic and electrical work, equipment repair, and general facility upkeep. Candidates with strong mechanical aptitude and a desire to learn, including recent technical school graduates, are encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities

• Perform preventive maintenance (PMs) on production equipment and facility systems to ensure reliable and safe operation.
• Assist the head maintenance technician in diagnosing and repairing mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues throughout the facility.
• Replace motors and related components as needed, following safety procedures and manufacturer specifications.
• Work with electrical systems up to 480V under guidance, including basic troubleshooting and repairs.
• Use hand tools, power tools, and grinders to complete maintenance, repair, and fabrication tasks.
• Conduct facility repair and general handyman-style tasks, such as minor building maintenance and upkeep.
• Read and interpret industrial blueprints and schematics to support troubleshooting and repair activities.
• Support hydraulic system maintenance, including inspection, basic troubleshooting, and component replacement.
• Assist with welding tasks when needed to repair or modify equipment and structures, if qualified.
• Troubleshoot mechanical and industrial equipment problems and implement effective repair solutions.
• Follow all safety policies and procedures, maintaining a clean and organized work area in a physically demanding environment.
• Collaborate with operations and maintenance team members to prioritize work orders and minimize equipment downtime.
• Remain flexible to perform various tasks across the facility as needed to support production and maintenance goals.

Essential Skills

• At least 2+ years of maintenance experience in an industrial, manufacturing, or similar environment.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to work with a wide range of industrial equipment.
• Working knowledge of hydraulics, including basic troubleshooting and maintenance of hydraulic systems.
• Electrical knowledge with the ability to work safely around electrical systems, including experience up to 480V.
• Proficiency in performing preventive maintenance on machinery and facility systems.
• Experience replacing motors and performing mechanical repairs on industrial equipment.
• Ability to use hand tools and power tools, including grinders, in a safe and effective manner.
• Comfort performing facility repair and general handyman-style tasks as part of the maintenance role.
• Ability to read and understand industrial blueprints and schematics for troubleshooting and repair.
• Demonstrated motivation, strong work ethic, and a genuine desire to learn and grow in the maintenance field.
• Ability to troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, and basic electrical issues in an industrial setting.
• Physically able to work in a dirty, demanding environment, including standing, bending, and lifting as required.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Graduation from a technical school or vocational program in maintenance, industrial technology, or a related field is welcomed.
• Experience as a maintenance technician in an industrial or steel-related environment is a plus.
• Welding skills and experience performing basic welding repairs are highly desirable.
• Experience wiring or working with 480V electrical systems is a strong asset.
• Familiarity with industrial equipment, steel processing, or distribution center operations is beneficial.
• Ability to interpret schematics and more complex technical documentation is an advantage.
• Strong troubleshooting skills across mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems.
• Adaptability to take on varied tasks and responsibilities as the facility grows and new equipment is installed.
• Interest in developing into leadership roles as the site expands and additional shifts are added.

Work Environment
You will work in a steel distribution center that ships and cuts metal coils, which can be a dirty and physically demanding environment. The role is primarily on first shift, typically 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday, with the expectation of occasional Saturday work if an emergency arises. You will regularly use hand tools, power tools, grinders, and industrial equipment while performing maintenance and repair tasks. The facility will be receiving brand-new equipment in 2025, creating an evolving and modernized work setting with the potential addition of second and third shifts. You should be prepared for a hands-on, industrial environment where safety, reliability, and teamwork are essential.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Franklin Park, IL.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $30.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
