Correctional Trades Leader

Position Newton Correctional Facility offers a Building and Mechanical Trades Maintenance Training Technician role. The position provides training and rehabilitation opportunities for offenders and requires hands‑on building maintenance, machine repair, and technical training in a correctional environment. Responsibilities Plan, assign, and direct incarcerated individuals in work task completion steps. Enforce discipline, safety, and security of offenders. Perform electrical routine maintenance. Paint walls, floors, woodwork, and fixtures. Do general masonry work, tuck points, and rebuild concrete walls and steps. Connect water supply and drainage lines. Open clogged drains and replace washers and pipes. Repair broken or cracked metal parts by setting up and operating welding equipment. Scrape, file, and grind welded parts. Repair or rebuild upholstered furniture. Install, service, and repair small window air conditioner units. Perform preventive maintenance on automobiles, trucks, and related equipment. Assist in repairing refrigeration and heating equipment. Troubleshoot facility equipment. Demonstrate initiative, effort, and commitment toward completing assignments efficiently. Work with minimal supervision and demonstrate responsible behavior and attention to detail. Read blueprints, diagrams, sketches, and other guidelines pertaining to building and mechanical trades work. Initiate purchase orders for replacement parts and supplies. Plan and lay out work, determine cost estimates, and maintain records associated with building and mechanical trades work. Search incarcerated individuals upon arrival and throughout the day. Evaluate and provide written documentation on incarcerated individuals’ job performance and behavior. Communicate issues to Supervisor. Attend meetings and training. Use computers and other office equipment as required to complete duties and as needed for other requests. Maintain accurate and up to date offender training records. Perform other related work duties as assigned. Looking for someone with metal fabrication with MIG and TIG welding experience. Qualifications Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification: Four years of full‑time work experience in one or more of the recognized building (e.g., carpentry, painting, plumbing/pipefitting, electrical and masonry) and mechanical/repair (e.g., air conditioning/heating, auto mechanics, upholstery, and welding) trades. A total of four years of education and/or full‑time experience, where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university coursework in a recognized building and mechanical trade for each year of the required experience. Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes one year of full‑time work as a Furniture Upholsterer, Mason, Maintenance Repairer, Carpenter 1 or 2, Painter 1 or 2, Plumber 1 or 2, or Welder.
