Senior Technical Engineering Leader - Guidewire Billing Center (Hybrid - Boston or Webster)

Lead the Future of Insurance Technology

Mapfre is seeking a Senior Technical Engineering Leader to provide technical leadership for our Guidewire BillingCenter platform and related billing ecosystem. This role will be instrumental in driving the architecture, design, development, and modernization of critical billing capabilities that support invoicing, payment processing, payment plans, fee management, collections, and customer billing experiences.

This position is ideal for an experienced technical leader who combines deep Guidewire expertise, insurance domain knowledge, and strong engineering leadership abilities. You will partner with Product Managers, Architects, Business Leaders, and Engineering teams to deliver scalable, secure, and innovative solutions that power MAPFRE's billing operations.

What You'll Do

Provide Technical Leadership

• Serve as the technical leader for Guidewire BillingCenter and related billing platform initiatives.
• Lead architecture and technical design discussions for new capabilities, enhancements, integrations, and modernization efforts.
• Establish engineering standards, development best practices, and architectural direction.
• Drive technical decision-making while balancing business priorities, scalability, security, maintainability, and operational excellence.
• Act as a trusted advisor to Product, Architecture, and Business stakeholders.

Design & Deliver Billing Solutions

• Design, develop, test, deploy, and support enterprise-scale solutions within Guidewire BillingCenter.
• Lead development efforts supporting:
  • Customer invoicing and statement generation
  • Payment plans and payment scheduling
  • Fee management
  • Collections and delinquency processing
  • Payment processing integrations
  • Billing customer servicing capabilities
• Architect and implement integrations between BillingCenter and internal/external platforms.
• Ensure solutions meet performance, security, reliability, and compliance requirements.

Drive Platform Modernization

• Lead initiatives focused on cloud adoption, automation, API enablement, and platform modernization.
• Identify opportunities to reduce technical debt and improve system architecture.
• Evaluate and leverage emerging technologies, including AI, automation, cloud-native services, and engineering productivity tools.
• Improve application scalability, observability, and operational resilience.

Mentor & Develop Engineering Talent

• Provide technical leadership and mentoring to software engineers and senior engineers.
• Conduct design reviews, code reviews, and architecture reviews.
• Foster a culture of engineering excellence, accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.
• Coach teams on software engineering best practices, Agile delivery, DevOps, and quality engineering.

Collaborate Across the Enterprise

• Partner closely with Product Managers, Technical Product Managers, Architects, QA, Operations, Finance, Customer Service, and Business stakeholders.
• Translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions.
• Support Agile planning, backlog refinement, estimation, and release activities.
• Communicate technical strategies, risks, and recommendations to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Support Operational Excellence

• Ensure platform availability, reliability, performance, and supportability.
• Utilize observability and monitoring tools to proactively identify and resolve issues.
• Lead root cause analysis and remediation efforts for critical production incidents.
• Maintain architecture documentation, technical standards, and system diagrams.

What You'll Bring

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or equivalent experience.
• 8+ years of software engineering experience with enterprise applications.
• 3+ years of technical leadership experience leading engineering teams or large-scale technology initiatives.
• Strong experience developing solutions using Java and object-oriented design principles.
• Experience designing and implementing enterprise integration solutions and distributed systems.
• Demonstrated success leading complex technical projects from concept through production deployment.
• Strong understanding of Agile development methodologies and engineering best practices.
• Experience mentoring engineers and influencing technical direction across teams.

Preferred Qualifications

• Guidewire BillingCenter implementation and development experience.
• Guidewire certifications strongly preferred.
• Deep understanding of insurance billing operations, including:
  • Invoicing
  • Payment Plans
  • Fee Management
  • Collections
  • Payment Processing
  • Customer Billing Servicing
• Experience with Gosu, Guidewire integrations, and Guidewire Cloud.
• Experience with PolicyCenter and Guidewire ecosystem integrations
• Experience with AWS cloud technologies and cloud-native architectures.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines, GitHub, DevOps practices, and automated testing frameworks.
• Experience with observability platforms such as Datadog and Splunk.
• Insurance industry experience strongly preferred.
• Experience supporting digital transformation and billing platform modernization initiatives.

Pay Philosophy: The typical starting salary range for this role is determined by several factors including skills, experience, education, ertifications, and location. Some roles at Mapfre are eligible for commission and/or bonus earnings, in addition to salary, calculated based upon factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.

Salary Range: $120,000 - $155,000
