HEAVY EQUIPMENT MECHANIC

$22.5 - $30.02 per hour

Position Overview Heavy Equipment Mechanic – Position #20278. Full‑time. Salary $22.50/hour – $30.02/hour. Education and Experience Equivalent combination of 4 years of education and experience after high school in automotive mechanics, heavy equipment technology, or related field. Each additional year of approved formal education may replace one year of required work experience and vice versa. License and Certifications Valid driver’s license. Commercial Driver’s License (CDL‑B) with air brakes (preferred; required after‑hire). Other Requirements Provide own standard assortment of automotive mechanic tools through 1”, 26 mm diameter and 1/2” drive, test light, and basic digital multimeter. Motor Vehicle Record meets DOT minimum standards. Conditional upon obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License medical card unless already employed by the State. Negative result on pre‑employment urinalysis drug screen. Able to lift/carry up to 50 lbs. intermitently; frequent climbing, reaching, twisting, bending, squatting. May work in inclement weather or temperature extremes. Must have telephone or acceptable means of communication and be available 24 hours per day. Trainee Option Eligible for traineeship if you have 3+ years of relevant education and experience and/or lack a Class B CDL, but otherwise satisfy minimum requirements. Preferred Qualifications Completion of apprenticeship training (8,000 hours) in automotive service and repair, heavy equipment technology, or related field. Possession of Class B CDL with air brakes. After‑hire Requirements Obtain a valid Class B CDL with air brakes within one year of hire. Obtain vehicle Air Conditioning certification within six months. Certify to perform State of New Hampshire Motor Vehicle Inspections within one year of hire. Career Advancement Opportunities In‑Band advancement available: No. Broad Group Level advancement available: No. Responsibilities Diagnose all fleet equipment component malfunctions using computer software and repair manuals. Determine correct repair/modification procedures, secure parts, perform repairs, and road test vehicles/equipment to verify completion. Perform preventative maintenance. Inspect vehicles annually, conduct required repairs, and certify fleet vehicles meet NH DMV safety requirements. Install, inspect, and repair all variations of basic and computerized hydraulic systems of all equipment. Weld/fabricate as required. Respond to emergency roadside repairs to provide 24‑hour fleet service. Overhaul, repair, and replace various engines, transmissions, differentials, and related components. Supervise shop operation in Foreman’s absence and assume full responsibility. Document inspections, maintenance, and repairs for vehicle/equipment life‑history files. Occasionally operate mobile lifting crane, overhead crane or gantry crane during repairs or certain operations. Benefits The State of New Hampshire provides a comprehensive benefits package.
