HEAVY EQUIPMENT MECHANIC State of New Hampshire, Department of Transportation, Bureau of Mechanical Services – 15 Hodson Shore Road, Center Ossipee, NH Position #20278 Salary: $22.50 per hour – $30.02 per hour. (Trainee pay rate $21.63 per hour; trainee status must be achieved within one year). SUMMARY: Perform journeyman-level diagnostic, preventive maintenance, and repair work on fleet heavy equipment to maintain serviceability. RESPONSIBILITIES: Diagnose component malfunctions using computer software and repair manuals; determine correct repair procedures. Secure parts, perform repairs, and road-test vehicles to verify completion. Perform preventive maintenance and annual inspections per NH DMV safety requirements. Install, inspect, and repair hydraulic systems, computer-controlled gearboxes, transmissions, and other engine components. Weld/fabricate as required for equipment repair. Respond to emergency roadside repairs and provide 24‑hour fleet repair service. Overhaul, repair, and replace gasoline and diesel engines, automatic & manual transmissions, and related components to minimize costly replacements. Supervise shop operations during foreman’s absence. Document inspections, maintenance, and repairs in vehicle/equipment life‑history files. Operate mobile lifting cranes, overhead or gantry cranes when necessary. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Equivalent combination of 4 years of education and experience after high school. Education and experience in automotive mechanics, heavy equipment technology, or mechanical repair of heavy equipment. Valid driver’s license. Provide own standard assortment of automotive mechanic tools (e.g., 1” / 26 mm & ½” drive, test light, digital multimeter). Motor Vehicle Record meeting DOT standards. Negative result on preemployment urinalysis drug screen. Ability to lift/carry up to 50 lb intermittently; frequent climbing, reaching, twisting, bending, squatting; work in inclement weather or temperature extremes. Telephone or other communication means available 24 hours. TRAINEE OPTION: Candidates with a combination of 3+ years of relevant education and experience or who lack a Class B CDL but otherwise meet minimum requirements may be hired in trainee status. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Completion of apprenticeship training (8,000 hours) in automotive repair, heavy equipment technology, or related field. Possession of Class B CDL with air brakes. AFTER‑HIRE REQUIREMENTS: Obtain a valid Class B CDL with air brakes within one year of hire. Obtain vehicle air‑conditioning certification within six months of employment. Certify to perform State of New Hampshire motor‑vehicle inspections within one year of hire. WORK SCHEDULE: Full‑time, available 24‑hour fleet repair service as required.
