Marine Operations Coordinator, Hawai'i Island

Job Overview The Marine Operations Coordinator (MOC) supports science-based fieldwork, maintenance, boating, and diving operations that advance marine projects for the Hawaiʻi Island Marine Program. The MOC provides technical leadership to the Hawaiʻi Island Marine Team, operates vessels, supports diving operations and fieldwork, maintains vessels and equipment, collects scientific data, and ensures safe execution of marine operations. The MOC reports to the Program Manager and coordinates with staff across the Marine and Hawaiʻi programs. Auto Safety Program This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with TNC’s Auto Safety Program. Employees may not drive Conservancy‑owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered “high risk drivers.” Compliance with the Vehicle Use Agreement is required. Responsibilities Coordinate marine field operations, including vessel and diving activities; perform maintenance on vessels and equipment; assist in scientific data collection and project implementation; ensure safety and regulatory compliance during marine operations. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree and 3 years of relevant marine field experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience). Experience operating vessels less than 40 ft with outboard motors up to 180 hp, safely deploying and retrieving SCUBA divers. SCUBA diving experience with an AAUS institution or equivalent certification. Current CPR, First Aid, and O₂ administration certification. Experience working with local community partners and stakeholder groups in Hawai‘i. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, web browsers, and video conferencing platforms. Ability to perform physical work and lift 50 lbs. Desired Qualifications Experience in coral restoration or coral husbandry using current methods and science. Experience conducting ecological reef surveys in Hawaiʻi. Experience maintaining gasoline engines, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting mechanical and electrical repairs on vessels. Multilingual skills and cross‑cultural experience appreciated. Ability to apply science for decision‑making and guide activities. Experience with structure‑from‑motion photogrammetry data collection, processing, and analysis. Excellent time and task management, organizational skills, and attention to detail. Strong communication skills in written, spoken, and graphical forms. Salary The starting annual pay is within the range of $63,100 – $66,890. This range applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA and whose primary office is in Kailua‑Kona, HI.
